Pentaphyllus reibnitzi sp. nov. from Cyprus is described, representing the fourth species of Pentaphyllus from the western Palaearctic Region. All four species from this area are figured, a key for their identification and selected faunistic data are given. Two species have a wider distribution in the western Palaearctic Region, and two are restricted to limited areas in Azerbaijan or Cyprus, respectively. The type specimens of the new species were found in polypores, collected from a dead tree of Ficus carica in an extensively cultivated garden near seashore. Lectotype of Pentaphyllus nitidulus Reitter, 1884 is designated.
A new species of the genus Isomira Mulsant, 1856, I. aliquoi sp. nov., is described from the island of Cyprus. It is compared to all its relatives of the Eastern Mediterranean Basin.
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is transmitted by a fecal oral route from animals to humans following exposure to the body fluids of infected animals. We investigated the seroprevalence of anti-hepatitis E (anti-HEV) antibodies by monitoring IgG and IgM virus antibodies amongst employees in the animal industry in North Cyprus through a cross-sectional study. Samples were taken from individuals without occupational exposure to animals and from those who worked with animals (doing animal husbandry, veterinary work or butchery). Enzymelinked immunoassays were used to detect anti-HEV IgG and IgM in the blood samples. The prevalence of anti-HEV IgG antibodies was 3.0% (12/400), while the prevalence of anti-HEV IgM antibodies was 0.25% (1/400). The prevalence of anti-HEV IgG amongst the samples received from females was approximately 2.5-fold higher than samples received from males (2.4%). Anti-HEV IgG was detected amongst 7% of animal husbandry workers and amongst 2% of veterinarians and butchers. The current findings represent the first records of HEV surveillance in Cyprus. We investigated the seroprevalence of anti-HEV by monitoring IgG and IgM virus antibodies amongst employees.
Megaphyllum uncinatumj sp. nov. is described from both Israel and Cyprus. It is assigned, together with M. iranicum Golovatch, 1983, from Iran, to the previously monotypie subgenus Persebrachyiulus Golovatch, 1983 of the large Eastern Euro-Mediterranean genus Megaphyllum Verhoeff, 1894. A refined diagnosis of Persebrachyiulus is provided. Some zoogeographical comments are also presented, likely implying several cases of anthropochoric introduction to Cyprus from the mainland Middle East and possibly even vice versa.
Quercus alnifolia is an endemic species in Cyprus, and it is rated as Vulnerable (VU) in the Red List of Oaks. Although Q. alnifolia has a great ecological importance, there are only few studies about this species. In this work we have studied the natural variability of this species by analyzing acorn dimensions, acorn mass, length of embryo, moisture content of acorns and seed germinability among the seven acorn provenances, collected in Cyprus. We also determined the seeds responses to drying. Germination trials were also carried out, and differences in seed germination among populations were examined. Rate of water loss and its effect on seed germination was also estimated by application of specific desiccation treatments. The results showed that acorn characteristics significantly differed between the populations, following a general trend to reduce their dimensions and mass with the altitude increase. Seed germination was high for all studied populations, and germination behaviour was similar for all populations. Desiccation of acorns below 35% resulted in a great reduction of seed germination capacity.
Two new species, namely Baetis (Baetis) mirkae sp. nov. (larva, female subimago, and male imago) and Baetis (Rhodobaetis) irenkae sp. nov. (larva and male imago), from Cyprus are described and their critical diagnostic characters illustrated. The former is a representative of the subgenus Baetis s. str. (the B. lutheri species-group) showing close relationships mainly to B. (B.) lutheri Müller-Liebenau, 1967 and B. (B.) vardarensis Ikonomov, 1962; the latter is classified within the subgenus Rhodobaetis Jacob, 2003, being related mainly to B. (R.) ilex Zimmermann, 1978. Affinities of these new species to all representatives of respective related species-group and Rhodobaetis are discussed in detail and brief notes to their biology and distribution are presented. Based on data available so far, a detailed biogeographical analysis directed mainly to chorology and faunistic origin of 8 Palaearctic representatives of the B. lutheri species-group and 26 species of Rhodobaetis (incl. B. irenkae sp. nov. described below) is offered.
