The analysis of the factors, connected with the different features of particular macrophyte species, determining the spatial distribution of zooplankton communities (rotifers and crustaceans) was purpose of this study. Particular zooplankton species reveal habitat preferences, which reflect variability in the spatial structure of particular macrophyte species, which is connected with different shape, length and width of stems.
Charophytes possess the capacity to store large amounts of various elements, but until today no studies about known methods of determining CaCO₃ and elements in charophytes have been conducted. Because of the large and varying amounts of CaCO₃, it is difficult to estimate the actual element content in dry mass. Simple comparisons of elements in charophyte plant tissue or between charophytes and higher plants are impossible. The main aim of this study was to investigate through laboratory experiments content of carbonates and elements in charophyte tissue using different methods of decomposition (mineralization). The proposed protocol: determination of calcium carbonate content in plants, determination of elements present in the plant dry mass, and calculation of the element content in the plant dry mass as described.
Low molecular weight peptidic component extracted from maturing male sex organs of Chara tomentosa, capable of inducing increased condensation of chromosomes and profound changes in the cell cycle progression, was applied to gametophytes of Anemia phyllitidis. Morphogenetic effects were studied with regard to cell divisions and GA₃-induced antheridiogenesis. As compared with both the GA⁻₃ and GA⁺₃ control samples, the extract-treated prothallia exhibited considerably lowered number of cells and altered morphology. Antheridial differentiation in prothallia of A. phyllitidis was severely inhibited when peptidic extract was added to medium containing GA₃. Considering endocytotic uptake, evidenced in root meristems, and those effects which have been observed in plant and human cells, the activity of extracts obtained from male sex organs of Chara may be interpreted as inhibitory influence acting via repression or modification of the genetic device of the cells rather, than a direct consequence of the retardation of cell division cycles.
