The territory of the Wildlife and Landscape Protection Area in Morasko is a very valuable object with a seminatural landscape, covered by meadows, small paths of forests and fields. Unfortunately, the terrain is an area of intensive urbanization since about 10 years . Chosen species of genus Carex growing in the humid hay meadows have been monitored during last 8 years. In the case of populations of Carex acuta, Carex riparia and Carex acutiformis, the area covered by each species and conditions of the populations were significantly decreasing. In the case of the population of Carex panicea the area, density and condition of population were slightly increasing during the years of study. Observed effects can be connected with the changes of ground water level, which are probably the effects of influence of building-sites. The regression of populations of species of wetland ecosystems is a sign of harmful processes of simplification of landscape and decreasing of local biodiversity.
Phenolic acids from herbs of two genuses Carex were analysed by Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Ten following phenolic acids were identified: caffeic, protocatechuic, gentisic, p-coumaric, p-hydroxybenzoic, p-hydroxyphenylacetic, synapic, ferulic, syringic, and vanilic. These compounds were identified by comparison with authentic standards. By the RP-HPLC method the content of seven phenolic acids (caffeic, protocatechuic, p-coumaric, p-hydroxybenzoic, ferulic, syringic, and vanilic) was determined.
The paper presents taxonomical division of the sectio Vulpinae (Carey) Christ. and key to the determination of this taxa, occurring in Wielkopolska region. This work is a part of a larger description, concerning taxonomy and geographical distribution of species from the genus Carex L. in Poland.
The new collections of Anthracoidea buxbaumii Kukkonen on Carex buxbaumii Wahlenb. and Anthracoidea hostianae B.Lindeb. ex Nannf. on Carex lepidocarpa Tausch recorded in the calcareous mires in South-East Poland are described, illustrated and discussed. The holotype of the latter smut is also re-examined, described and illustrated in detail. Anthracoidea buxbaumii is reported for the second time from Poland on a new host plant. Anthracoidea hostianae is new to Poland. The variability of spore sizes of both species is discussed. The conspecificity of Anthracoidea buxbaumii and A. hostianae suggested in the literature is analyzed.
This paper reports the results of research concerning the taxonomy of Polish species of the genus Carex L., sectio Paniculatae (Carey) Christ. and presents its taxonomical division and key to the determination of this taxa. This work is a part of a larger description, concerning taxonomy of species from the genus Carex L. in Poland.
Sedges are attractive ornamental plants, thanks to the specific structure of their inflorescences, perigynium morphology, an interesting habit and extended dates of individual phenological stages varying between species. Analyses were conducted on 15 sedge species differing in traits of their inflorescence shoots and varying in the shape and size of perigynia. Species characteristic of diverse habitats were selected so that they would meet the full spectrum of requirements of landscape architects. A nine-point scale was applied in this study, in which the decorative value of the investigated sedges was assessed. The greatest decorative value scores were recorded for Carex spicata, C. remota and C. pallescens (19 points each) and C. paniculata (18). In contrast, the lowest scores were found for C. ericetorum (12), C. digitata (13) and C. curta (14). Sedges planted in gardens are highly desirable elements of the landscape, particularly thanks to the phenotypic plasticity observed practically in all species throughout the entire vegetative season.
This paper presents the results of the research on the anatomical structure of the stems and leaves and on the sculpture of the nuts of the sedges from section Muehlenbergianae (L.H. Bailey) Kük. The results show, that the anatomical structure of the vegetative organs cannot be an effective criterion of a taxonomical division. The most important interspecific differences occur among shapes and size of the exocarp cells, and among the presence or absence of the silica bodies on the surfaces of the cells. The greatest variation in the features listed above is observed in Carex divulsa Stokes subsp. leersii (Kneucker) W. Koch.
