This article is a first part of the rewiev of the house-dust-mite-atopy problem data. It includes informations on biology of these mites with emphasis of medical aspect and control. We hope that these informations will be of considerable interest to many readers because of the greatly increased investigations into the role of house dust mite sensitivity in allergic diseases.
Five genera Teklathiana, Averithiana, Metriothiana, Dorynothiana, Eunorithiana and six species are described as new: Teklathiana onnae from Colombia ectoparasite on Acromis sparsa, Metriothiana bolebori from Honduras on Metrionella bilimeki, Averithiana anoni from French Guiana on Zatrephina lineata, Dorynothiana jurandi from Brazil on Dorynota pugionata, Eunorithiana aidae from Colombia on Plagiometriona phoebe and E. heliodori from Brazil on P. ludicra. A key to neotropical genera of canestriniid mites is given.
A systematic review of pterolichid feather mites of the Psittophagus generic group (Pterolichidae, Pterolichinae) is presented. New feather mite taxa are described: Psittaculobius quadriglobus gen. nov., sp. nov. from the Long-tailed Parakeet Psittacula longicauda (type host) and the Red-breasted Parakeet P. alexandri (Psittacidae, Psittacinae), Psittophagus calyptorhynchi sp. nov. from the Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus funereus (Cacatuidae, Calyptorhynchinae). A key to all genera and species of the Psittophagus group and taxonomic comments on formerly described species are provided, and host-parasite associations of these mites with the parrots from the Old World are briefly discussed. It is hypothesised that the Psittophagus group originated on the ancestors of Psittaciformes at the same time as other pterolichine groups specific to parrots, but in the process of coevolution with these hosts it has achieved significant success on Cacatuidae only, while on Psittacidae, the representatives of this group have been retained only on few phylogenetic lineages in the Old World.
Three new species of the feather mite genus Pteroherpus Gaud, 1981 are described from the bulbuls (Passeriformes, Pycnonotidae) in Africa: Pteroherpus nicator sp. nov. from Nicator gularis Hartlaub et Finsch, 1870, P. pyrrhuri sp. nov. from Pyrrhurus scandens (Swainson, 1837), and P. trinoton sp. nov. from Phyllastrephus terrestris Swainson, 1837.
Two new feather mite species are described from ground finches of the genus Geospiza (Passeriformes, Emberizidae) collected on Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. Mesalgoides (s. str.) geospizae sp. nov. (Psoroptoididae) is found on Geospiza scandens (type host), G.fortis, G. fuliginosa, and G. conirostris; Xolalgoides palmai sp. nov. (Xolalgidae) is found on G. scandens (type host), G. fortis, and G. fuliginosa.
A new representative of the subfamily Analginae, Anhemialges mironovi sp. nov., collected from feathers of the Savi’s warbler Locustella luscinoides (Savi, 1824) (Passeriformes, Sylviidae) from the region of South Dobrudzha (Bulgaria), is described. This species is most similar to A. gaudi Mironov, 2009. The new species differs from A. gaudi by the following features in males: the incision in the interlobar membrane is longer, the gastral shield is split into two parts, and the hysteronotal shield bears a crescent-shaped subtegumental sclerotisation.
A new subfamily Dajarrosteiniinae with two new genera Dajarrosteinia and Aricosteinia are created for two new species Dajarrosteinia romualdae and Aricosteinia seweriani; both obtained from Tenebrionidae (Coleoptera) in Australia.
A new subfamily Vereoxiinae among Canestriniidae is created for the new genus Vereoxia with one species V. bogeri n. sp. Four new canestriniid species are described: Gasuthiana melillae n. sp. from undetermined Tenebrionidae, Brazil, Afrocanestrinia rufinae n. sp. from Smaragdesthes oertzeni, Tanzania, A. samsoni n. sp. from S. africana, Senegal, Canestriniella phoebinae n. sp. from Batocera albofasciata octomaculata, Java. New diagnosis of the genera Gasuthiana, Afrocanestrinia and Canestriniella are given.
