Redescription of the genus Melisoides Strand, 1912 [Lepidoptera: Arctiidae] with notes on its synonymy

The Afrotropical monotypic genus Melisoides STRAND is redescribed. The redescription of Melisoides lobata STRAND, 1912 as well as new data on the distribution of the genus are provided. Collartisa KIRIAKOFF is synonymized with Melisoides STRAND (new synonym). Two new synonyms of Melisoides lobata STR. are proposed: Paramelisa bitjeana BETHUNE-BAKER, 1927 and Collartisa collartorum KIRIAKOFF, 1953. Photographs of the adults and male and female genitalia are included.

Blaisea bicalcarata Simon, 1909 is synonymised with B. lyrata Simon, 1902 and transferred to the genus Tusitala Peckham et Peckham, 1902; a new combination - T. lyrata - is proposed. A redescription of the male and the first description of the female of T. lyrata are provided. The range of morphological variation of the male chelicera in the species is shown. The generic name Blaisea Simon, 1902 is synonymised with Tusitala Peckham et Peckham, 1902.

Evarcha culicivora sp. nov., a jumping spider from western Kenya, is described. Records of natural prey are summarized, showing that this species feeds primarily on female mosquitoes, including Anopheles gambiae, the most important vector of human malaria in East Africa. This may be a salticid with unusually direct significance for public health.

H. moestus Peckham et Peckham, 1903, H. bevisi Lessert, 1925 and H. marleyi Lessert, 1925 are recognised as junior synonyms of H. treleaveni. The new distributional data are mapped. Data on the species’ natural history and observations from captive specimens are also presented.
