Packaging for food in the European Union is subjected to legal regulations in order to assure health protection to consumers. The threats resulting from the application of packaging are connected with a potential migration into food of substances that are included in packaging material among them also components of printing inks applied for package printing but not expected to be present in food. The substances derived from printing inks (ITX, 4-MBP) found in food as some non-expected threats have an essential significance for the safety of food. The observance of legally binding requirements concerning the composition of packaging material and admissible migration limits of substances and also the application of good manufacturing practice allows to avoid many threats derived from packaging and to manufacture safe food packages for the food industry.
