The style forms of public utility buildings in the first half of 20th century in Poland

In the paper the variety of architectural styles in the early 20th century is presented, showing examples of public utility buildings, erected in this time in Poland. An example of historical style is the National Savings Bank edifice in Cracow, erected in the years 1922–1924 according to the Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz design. Simultaneously a new style, referred to as Art Nouveau appeared. The competition for National Savings Bank in Rzeszów, announced in 1906 was taking into account the traits of Art Nouveau, and in the result the design different from historical styles, with an asymmetric elevation was selected for realization. On Podhale and gradually in other regions the Zakopane style became prevalent in those days; the kindergarten in Nałęczów, designed by Jan Witkiewicz-Koszczyc was built in this style. The next example is the Post Office edifice in Wrocław, designed by Lothar Neumann and erected in the years 1926–1929. In the final part of the paper the Post Office edifice in Ciechocinek, built in the modernism style in 1933 according to the design of Romuald Gutt and Józef Jankowski, is presented; this edifice even in our times attracts attention by its novatory form and a good realization.

Podczas codziennej działalności inżynierskiej bardzo często pomija się zagadnienie zmienności w czasie zasad projektowania, w szczególności ewolucji przepisów normowych. W przypadku konstrukcji betonowych okresem ich najbardziej intensywnego rozwoju był początek XX wieku. Miejscem, w którym ten rozwój był szczególnie widoczny, są Stany Zjednoczone. Jednym z najbardziej znanych obiektów pochodzących z tamtego okresu jest budynek wysokościowy o konstrukcji żelbetowej Ingalls Building w Cincinnati w stanie Ohio. W artykule przedstawiono ewolucje zmian zasad projektowania konstrukcji betonowych w Stanach Zjednoczonych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem początku XX wieku. W pracy wykorzystano archiwalne zbiory własne Auburn University w Alabamie.

Climatic conditions of the north-western part of Oscar II Land [Spitsbergen] in the period between 1975 and 2000

The paper describes climatic conditions of the north-western part of Oscar II Land (Spitsbergen) based on meteorological data from 1975 to 2000, which were taken from Ny Alesund and Kaffioyra-Heggodden stations. The changes in annual courses of main climatic elements are investigated. However, the authors focused mainly on the analysis of summer climate, because most of the field work is conducted at this time of the year. Aside from the standard climatic analysis, the influence of atmospheric circulation on selected meteorological elements was also investigated. The climate of the north-western part of Oscar II Land was compared with the climates of the remaining areas of the western coast of Spitsbergen. It was found that the climate of the studied area differs considerably from the climate of the central-inner and southern parts of the western coast of Spitsbergen (areas represented by the Svalbard Lufthavn and Hornsund stations respectively). The differences in climatic elements, however, are not stable throughout the year and in particular seasons and months can even change signs. Thus, any generalisation of results obtained based on seasonal data is inadmissible. It was also found that the wind conditions of the Kaffioyrare- gion are more representative of the north-western part of Oscar II Land than are the wind conditions of the Ny Alesund region.

The article presents the results of the analysis of changes of the urban population density in Central Poland in the 20th century using one of the statistical methods meant for the estimation of discrete distributions, the so-called kernel function, and its brief characteristics. The studies cover the period, for which comparable data has been gathered (from 1931 to 2010). The results of the studies have been presented in a textual form and on 9 drawings, showcasing the changes of the population density in Central Poland in the analyzed period.
