The qualitative and quantitative compositions of microfauna of the biofilm of the Rotating Biological Disc (RBD) and Rotating Biological Multicage (RBM) as a new structure of the rotating bed were compared. The composition and structure of communities indicating an overload of the bed were observed on the RBD with a loading of section I amounting to 137 g m-2 d-1. according to COD, and on the RBM to more than 277 g m-2 d-1.

The effect of wastewater retention time in a Phoredox system on microfauna composition in activated sludge

Laboratory experiments were carried out in 4 series differing as to waste- water retention time in anaerobic (t1), anoxic (t2), and aerobic (t3) chambers, and in a whole Phoredox system (t). Conditions for satisfactory development of the microfauna communities were ensured by the proportion t1: t2: t3 = 1.8 : 2.8 : 6.0 (h). This proportion was also characterised by the highest reduction of organic substances and nutrients. When t3 increased to 10.7 h, starvation symptoms appeared, whereas an increase of t1 to 4 h resulted in an oxygen deficiency in the microbiocoenosis. Reduction of t from 11.8 to 6.3 h increased the rate of microfauna washing out from the system.

Species and quantitative composition of ciliate communities were compared on four-section rotating biological discs, fed frontally and gradually with sewage at 0.018, 0.054, and 0.108 m3 m-2 d-1 hydraulic loadings. The system of step feeding essentially decreased the range of variability of taxon number and ciliate numbers within the bed together with changes in the gradient of environmental conditions. The numbers and species composition of communities depended on the mean loading of the bed.
