A field study was conducted in 2006–2008 at the Czesławice Experimental Farm belonging to the University of Life Sciences in Lublin. Its aim was to determine the size and structure of spring wheat yield, as well as weed biomass in a spring wheat crop under the conditions of herbicide application and crop protection using the „Aktywator” weeder harrow, with harrowing done at two different time of the day (daytime or nighttime). It was proved that harrowing done at the 3–4-leaf stage of spring wheat promoted the formation of similar grain yield and resulted in similar weed infestation of the spring wheat crop as compared the object with chemical weed control using a mixture of the herbicides Apyros 75 WG and Starane Super 101 SE. The yield-increasing effect of harrowing was not dependent on the time of performed treatment. However, harrowing at night produced better effects for the reduction of weed biomass than harrowing during the daytime.
Stwierdzono, że największy przyrost plonu ziarna i badanych cech plonotwórczych pszenicy ozimej spowodował herbicyd stosowany w dawkach zalecanej (200 g.ha-1) i zmniejszonej o 25%. W zachwaszczeniu pszenicy ozimej dominowały Apera spica-venti, Chenopodium album i Viola arvensis. Ich liczebność, a także pozostałych 29 taksonów, z wyjątkiem Setaria viridis, skutecznie ograniczały wszystkie dawki herbicydu Huzar 0,5 WG.

Soybean yield under different tillage systems

51%
In Poland the soybean is becoming an increasingly more popular crop plant that is valued, among others, for the high nutritional value of its seeds. There are few studies on the effect of tillage systems used for soybean which are carried out in the climatic conditions of our country. This proves the need to continue such research. The present study investigated the effect of plough tillage and direct seeding on seed yield and some yield components of two soybean cultivars (Augusta and Aldana) in the climatic conditions of central-eastern Poland. A three-year field experiment was established on lessive soil using a split-block design in four replications. The study showed that cv. Aldana produced higher seed yield by 10.6% compared to the other cultivar; this cultivar was also characterized by higher plant density after emergence and before harvest, a higher number of seeds per pod, and higher 1000 seed weight. Seed yield significantly varied depending on the tillage system used. Under conventional tillage, soybean produced 14.7% higher yield than in the case of direct seeding. Compared to plough tillage, no-tillage significantly reduced plant height and first pod height as well as plant density after emergence and before harvest.
Soybean cultivation is becoming more and more popular in many countries, including Poland, due to the high nutritional value of its seeds, its resistance to diseases and pests, as well as lower propensity to lodging compared to other legumes. Under the climatic conditions of Poland, soybean yield is largely dependent on weather conditions in a particular growing season, primarily temperature and rainfall. Studies on the effect of tillage systems used for soybean cropping under the climatic conditions of Poland are scarce. This proves the need to continue such research. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) on yield, weed infestation and seed qualitative composition of the ‘Mazowia’ soybean cultivar grown under the conditions of the Lublin Upland. A field experiment was carried out in the period of 2009-2012 at the Czesławice Experimental Farm (51°18′23″N 22°16′2″E). In 2010 the soybean plantation was terminated due to adverse weather conditions and related inhibited plant emergence. The experiment was set up on loess-derived grey-brown podzolic soil as a split-block design in four replicates. The present study showed that the soybean seed yield obtained under conventional tillage conditions was higher by 14.6% compared to that obtained under no-tillage. A higher plant density after emergence and before harvest as well as a higher plant height were found in the conventional tillage treatment. The protein, oil and fibre content in soybean seed was significantly affected only by weather conditions in particular growing seasons. A higher weed weight and richer floristic composition of weeds were found under no-tillage conditions in relation to conventional tillage.
The success of organic farming results from the need to produce top-quality food and, additionally, to protect the natural environment by applying eco-friendly agricultural practices and abandoning synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of organic and conventional production systems on the content of minerals and fatty acids in grain of oat, wheat and hulled and naked barley. Wheat grain from organic farming was characterized by a higher content of Mn and by significantly higher content of Fe, Zn, Ca and Mg when compared to grain originating from conventional farming. The increased availability of potassium in soil, caused by the applied potassium salt fertilization, was reflected in a higher content of this macronutrient in grain of all cereals from conventional cultivation. The tillage system was found not to exert the same effect on the content of Ca and Mg in all the cereals examined. Lower content of iron and zinc was determined in organic grains of barley and oat. Grain from the conventional cropping system (except naked barley) proved to be richer in lipids. Crude oil of organic cereals was richer in the most valuable polyunsaturated fatty acids than that of the conventionally-grown crops The study demonstrated a stronger dependency between the level of the elements examined and cereal species than between the level of elements and cultivation system.
Direct drilling is one of the methods to reduce tillage costs. Low labor intensity of this system also makes it possible to grow crops in locations where it is a problem to maintain optimal sowing time. However, the use of no-tillage can cause increased weed infestation of crop plants and as a consequence a decline in crop yields. The present study investigated the effect of two tillage systems, plough tillage and direct drilling, on the species composition, density and air-dry weight of weeds in crops of two soybean cultivars (‘Aldana’ and ‘Augusta’). A three-year field experiment was set up on loess-derived gray-brown podzolic soil. The study showed that the use of direct drilling for soybean cropping resulted in a significant increase in the density and dry weight of weeds relative to plough tillage. The study also found richer floristic composition of weeds and an increase in the numbers of dominant species under no-tillage conditions. Elymus repens, Echinochloa crus-galli and Chenopodium album were dominant weed species in all experimental treatments. Chenopodium album and Galinsoga parviflora were characterized by the highest constancy (constancy classes V and IV) in crops of both soybean cultivars, whereas Echinochloa crus-galli showed the highest constancy value in the ‘Aldana’ crop. Under direct drilling, most weed species were found to exhibit higher constancy compared to plough tillage.
