An analysis of results achieved by mares at stationary performance test was carried out. The research material included 901 halfbred mares entered for the Stationary Performance Test in 2007-2011. The effect of the mare's breed on the evaluation scores in free jumping, movement evaluation in walk, trot and canter, rideability, training aptitude and the total score, which was the ultimate evaluation score. The effect of matings on the total score was evaluated. The models included the effects of the year and of the Training Station. Calculations were performed with the SPSS Statistical Package ver. 19.0 - 2012, GML procedure. On the basis of the conducted analyses it was concluded, that the mean values of the scores for most evaluated features in Polish Halfbred and Wielkopolski mares by imported sires were significantly higher in comparison to the results of mares deriving from two Polish parents.
The analysis of results of mares at field performance tests was carried out. The research material consisted of 651 mares, which underwent the field performance test (FPT) in 2002-2011. The effect of the breed on the results in evaluation of free jumping, movement in walk, trot and canter, rideability and on the total score of the test was investigated. The effect of matings on the total score of the test was determined. The models inlcuded the effect of the year on the test, and the effect of the District Horse Breeder's Association, where the tests were organized. All calculations were performed using the statistical package SPSS ver. 19.0 - 2012, the GLM procedure. On the basis of the analyses carried out, it was concluded that mares of solely Polish origin had statistically significantly lower scores in comparison to the imported mares. The analysis of matings showed that Polish Halfbred mares and Wielkopolski mares which had one imported parent achieved statistically significantly higher mean values in all the evaluated traits in comparison to the mares descending from parents of Polish breeding.
The influence of the types of cross-breeding of the parental generation on the final results of stationary performance tests of polish half-bred mares. An analysis was made of the pedigrees of Polish half-bred mares that underwent a stationary performance test in Polish training stations in order to isolate the types of applied cross-breeding schemes of the parental generation. An attempt was made to determine the influence of particular cross-breeding schemes on the diversity of the value of the final results of the performance test, which is an indicator of the utility value of the mare. The research material consisted of the results of stationary saddle performance tests of 994 mares, obtained at training stations between a period of 2007-2012.The highest least squares means of the final results of the test were achieved by mares whose parents were representatives of foreign breeds, and the lowest by mares deriving from Małopolska breed parents. The largest group among mares taking the stationary saddle test consisted of daughters of one foreign breed parent and the second a Polish Warmblood. The greatest diversity among the schemes for selecting pairs for reproduction was found in the Polish Warmblood mare group. Mares deriving from both parents of the Małopolska breed, as well as from one parent of the Małopolska breed refined with Thoroughbred blood, showed the largest variability of the achieved results in the performance test.
It is thought that mares being 20 years old can still give birth to foals, some individuals are even longer capable to be pregnant. However, each year mare owners should realize that the older mare the more decreased horse fertility. An aged mare that has recently had a foal has a greater chance to become pregnant again than a mare of similar age that has remained barren despite being bred over multiple oestrous cycles during the previous breeding season. The fact that an older mare has never been mated previously (maiden mare) does not indicate whether she will be fertile or not. Older mares may develop clinical problems that may adversely affect fertility, which leads to consecutive stressful and troubling interventions of breeders and veterinarians. So, strategies increasing the probability of pregnancy in horses are essential for breeding management and for sure will help to maintain animal welfare at high level.
