Based on an external nitrogen source NH₄NO₃, the impacts of different nitrogen deposition treatments (i.e., CK, N5, N10, and N15) on the growth of the A. tauschii and its competition with wheat were investigated. This experiment was conducted in pots using simulated N deposition tests. The results showed that: (1) the plant height, leaf area, and tiller number of both monocultured and mixed planted A. tauschii and wheat increased gradually with increasing nitrogen deposition. In the same nitrogen deposition treatment, the tiller number of A. tauschii was significantly higher than that of wheat. (2) In both monoculture and mixed planting pots, the root biomass and root–crown ratios of A. tauschii to wheat decreased with increasing nitrogen deposition. However, the leaf–biomass ratio of the former showed a gradual increasing trend with increasing nitrogen deposition. (3) Under monoculture and mixed planting modes, the chlorophyll content of A. tauschii increased consistently with increasing nitrogen deposition, but the chlorophyll content of wheat first increased and then decreased. Moreover, the SOD activity, relative conductivity, and MDA content of A. tauschii and wheat constantly increased with increasing nitrogen deposition. (4) In the mixed planting pots, the relative yield of A. tauschii was > 1. The competition balance index of this plant was > 0 and increased with increasing nitrogen deposition. In a nutshell, the ability of A. tauschii to compete with wheat is gradually enhanced with increasing nitrogen deposition; and its adaptability to high nitrogen stress surpasses that of the latter.

(S.) lepisminci spp. nov., they can not to be placed under four species groups established. A key to the species of uncertain affinity among species group from China is provided.
Background. Lactobacillus bulgaricus LB6 is a bacterium which was selected in the commercial yoghurt with high angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity. Preparation of concentrated starter cultures via freeze drying is of practical importance to dairy and food industries. Material and methods. We optimized the optimal sugar alcohol and proteins for Lactobacillus bulgaricus LB6 during the process of freeze drying using a Plackett-Burman design. In our initial tests survival rate and the number of viable cells were associated with the type of ly oprotectant used and so our optimization protocol focused on increasing survival rate. Substances that had previously had a protective effect during freeze drying were investigated, for example: mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, meso-erythritol, lactitol, whey protein isolate 90, bovine serum albumin, and whey protein concentrate 80 and soy protein isolate 70. Results. We found that the optimum sugar alcohol and proteins for survival of Lactobacillus bulgaricus LB6 were whey protein concentrate (p = 0.0040 for survival rate), xylitol (p = 0.0067 for survival rate) and sorbitol (p = 0.0073 for survival rate), they showed positive effect (whey protein concentrate and sorbitol) or negative effect (xylitol). Discussion. The effectiveness of three chosen sugar alcohols and protein implied that they could be used as lyoprotectant for Lactobacillus bulgaricus LB6 in the further research, the optimal composition of sugar alcohol and protein for the lyoprotectant use must be established.
Background. Probiotics defined as additional microorganisms were added to goat milk powder, which not only improves the intestinal flora balance but also promotes human and animal health. The objectives of this study were to improve and guarantee high probiotics viable count and accordance with consumer’s acceptance. Material and methods. The reading selected the number of colony between 30 and 300, then calculated the viable count per gram of goat milk tablet (cfu/g). The items of sensory evaluation included: appearance, flavour, colour, texture and taste. The score test was composed of 5 trained assessors, scored combination of different formulations (fuli marks of 100 points) and recorded the results. Results. Analysis of the results showed that sucrose, inulin and mannitol were selected as the main effective parameters on both viable count and sensory evaluation. Furthermore optimization of the formulation of probiotic goat milk tablets was to maximise the probiotics viable count to achieve 9.5·108 cfu/g and its scores of sensory evaluation to get 94 points. Discussion. Future probiotics products will be combined with a variety of probiotics, which can display their respective advantages and characteristics. Thus the products will not only be in accordance with the requirements of human health and trend of social development, but also will quickly become a favorite among consumers.
The cell size variations in woody plants in various environments are not well known, and the underlying mechanism has not been fully analyzed. 2. The current study focused on the intraspecific and interspecific size variations in palisade cells occurring in 76 woody species along an elevation gradient (1800–4500 m a.s.l.) on Gongga Montain (1400–7552 m a.s.l.) in southwest China, which included tropical and subtropical genera of broad-leaved forest flora including Salix hyperba as the species occurring on all elevations. We hypothesized that cell size is regulated by alterations in width-length scaling (L-D ratio) to mediate a surface-to-volume ratio (S/V) most suitable for the prevailing environmental conditions. 3. It was observed that cell size co-varied similarly with environmental conditions at the conspecifics, congenerics, and interspecifics levels investigated. Cell sizes decreased among conspecifics, or increase among congenerics and interspecifics via negative or positive scaling of width-length ratio at the cellular level. However, this dichotomously differing tendency may be ecologically constrained by both a cost-increasing and benefit-diminishing mechanism of cell dimension with increasing elevation at the species level, implying a ‘middle way’ strategy for species to stressed environments. 4. The implications of the results for regional floristic evolution are discussed.
Plant species growing in shallow-soil habitat are likely to experience water deficit especially in seasonally dry or arid regions. However, only scarce studies focused on their water-use strategies. The current study aimed to reveal water-use strategies of different species growing on continuous dolomite outcrops (a typical shallow-soil habitat) in subtropical China that relied on different water sources, and to investigate the differences between narrow endemic and widespread species, based on season variations in leaf δ¹³C values. Leaf samples of six plant species (Radermachera sinica, Sapium rotundifolium, Sterculia euosma, Schefflera octophylla, Alchornea trewioides, and Vitex negundo, in different life-forms and leaf phenologies) were collected for carbon isotope measurements in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Contrary to the expectation, the evergreen big shrub species, S. octophylla, which always relied on deep water sources, exhibited the most positive δ¹³C values (high water-use efficiency, WUE), indicating more conservative water-use strategies. While the two deciduous small shrubs, A. trewioides and V. negundo, which always relied on shallow water sources, exhibited the most negative δ¹³C values (low WUE). This result was associated with their short life spans, indicating an opportunistic water-use strategy. Leaf δ¹³C values of almost all (except for S. octophylla) the selected species were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the dry season than in the wet season. This indicated that it was a common strategy for species in rocky karst habitat to improve their WUE in dry season. Despite the similar water sources utilized by the selected three tree species, the widespread one (R. sinica) exhibited greater improvement in leaf δ¹³C values than the narrow endemic ones (S. rotundifolium and S. euosma). This suggested that the widespread tree species had more flexible water-use strategies. It was further speculated that broad spatial distribution of widespread species may contribute to their highly plastic responses to changes in environmental conditions rather than always maintaining high WUE.
Background: This study aimed to investigate the expression and localisation of follicle stimulating hormone receptor/growth hormone receptor/luteinising hormone receptor (FSHR/GHR/LHR) in different tissues and examine the regulatory effects of FSHR/GHR/LHR in the reproductive organs of female yaks during luteal phase. Materials and methods: The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry assays were utilised to analyse the expression and localisation of FSHR/GHR/LHR in different tissues on female yaks. Results: The qRT-PCR results showed that the mRNA expressions of FSHR/GHR/ /LHR were significantly different in the non-reproductive organs (p < 0.01); the highest expression level was observed in the kidney, cerebellum and lung, whereas the lower expression level was observed in the liver and spleen. Immunohistochemistry assay results showed that FSHR/GHR/LHR were located in kidney tubules, Purkinje cells, cerebellar medulla, alveolar cells and hepatocytes. In addition, the expression levels of FSHR and GHR were considerably higher than LHR in the reproductive organs of female yaks during luteal phase (p < 0.01). FSHR/GHR/LHR were located in cardiac muscle cells, cerebellar medulla, and theca cell lining of reproductive organs. Furthermore, the expression level of FSHR was higher than those of GHR and LHR in all examined tissues. Conclusions: Therefore, the expression and localisation of FSHR/GHR/LHR possibly helped to evaluate the effects of them in tissue specific expression on female yaks, investigate the function and mechanism of FSHR/GHR/LHR in the reproductive organs of female yaks during luteal phase. Epiphytes and hemi-epiphytes are important floristic, structural and functional components of tropical rainforests. Their specific responses to light, temperature and water conditions during seed germination allow them to coexist with tropical forest trees. Here we investigated the effects of temperature, red to far-red light ratio (R:FR ratio) and water stress on seed germination of Ficus virens in tropical seasonal rainforest in Southwest China. We used incubators to create required temperature regimes, polyester filters to produce R:FR ratio gradients and mannitol solutions to simulate water stress. It was found that seed germination of F. virens was inhibited in the simulated understory conditions, i.e., at lower temperature (22/23°C), especially when combined with the R:FR ratio of 0.25, for which the germination percentage was less than 20%. In contrast, the seed germination percentages in the simulated canopy environment (22/32°C) showed no significant difference between R:FR ratios, with an average seed germination percentage as high as 65.8%. Seed germination delayed and decreased along with increasing water stress and was completely inhibited at -2.5 MPa, which might suggest that it is a kind of adaptation for F. virens seeds to detect the rainy season as germination chance on the canopy. Therefore, our study revealed the physiological mechanism for F. virensto be able to adapt to canopy environment.
There is little consistent evidence for evolutionary associations from seed production to seedling fitness. In this study, 20 species of Rhododendron genus were selected from subtropical forests of southwest China; the life-history functional traits such as the seed size, seed number per twig, germination traits, dispersal and seedling survival were investigated, the ecological relationships among them were tested and the advantages of small-seeded species were discussed. The results show that the quantitative parameters of germination, such as the germination rate, potential, and index are positively correlated with seed number produced per stem, while temporal parameters, such as germination peak timing and duration are positively correlated with seed size. The two results indicate that different Rhododendron species with different seed sizes and relative seed number can deal with varying environments according to spatial dispersal or time dispersal, respectively, and the advantages of smaller seeds in the aspect of sprouting vigour, dispersal ability and seedling survival may lay the foundation for the establishment of small-seeded plants in the forest.
Coastline is one type of valuable non-renewable resources. From the perspective of economic theory, it can gather population, promote traffic construction, and then improve the level of international trade. The research object of this paper is the coastline resource in Dafeng area. Firstly, we have a brief summary of the existing coastline evaluation literature, then introduce the location and natural attributes of the coastline resources in Dafeng. Following that, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) model is used to build the economic evaluation index system based on the characteristics of coastline in Dafeng. Specially, this index system consists of 6 factors, and a total of 41 detailed indicators were chosen including water depth, GDP, etc. On this basis, we use the assignment method to quantify the weight of each index, and calculate the comprehensive score of coastline resource by using the YAAHP software. The final conclusion is as follows: The total score of economic evaluation of coastline resource in Dafeng is 0.87. Therefore, the coastline resource in Dafeng will eventually be constructed a unique coastal economic zone, where the implemented port industrial projects will include shipbuilding, logistics, mechanical processing etc
Long-term overgrazing has resulted in grassland deterioration and even desertification on the eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. In this paper, we examined the characteristics of vegetation and soil properties in the livestock-excluded pastures and the adjacent grazed pastures under two topographic habitats (the flat valley and the south-facing slope). Seven-year exclusion of livestock has enhanced aboveground live biomass, root biomass and litter accumulation. Livestock exclusion has also increased soil bulk density and soil water content, soil organic C concentration, total N concentration and its transformation rate, and soil microbial activity. The results showed that livestock exclusion has facilitated vegetation recovery and improved physical, chemical and biological properties of soil. However, livestock exclusion has significantly decreased graminoid biomass accumulation, especially on the flat valley, the biodiversity also significantly decreased there. The results suggested that long-term livestock exclusion was disadvantageous for palatable forage production and biodiversity protection on the flat valley. Compared to the flat valley, the grassland on the south-facing slope was under more severe degradation, and the reversion was in a slower process. Thus, the optimal grassland management in the livestock-excluded pasture on the flat valley should include a low or moderate grazing intensity or adopt an alternate grazing system, but more effective and even longer livestock exclusion practice should be taken on the south-facing slope.

Root growth and thickening plays a key role in the final productivity and even the quality of storage roots in root crops. This study was conducted to identify and map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) affecting root morphological traits in Brassica rapa by using molecular markers. An F₂ population was developed from a cross between Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis) and turnip (B. rapa ssp. rapifera), which differed greatly in root characters. A genetic map covering 1837.1 cM, with 192 marker loci and 11 linkage groups, was constructed by using this F₂ population. The F₃ families derived from F₂ plants were grown in the field and evaluated for taproot traits (thickness, length, and weight). QTL analysis via simple interval mapping detected 18 QTLs for the 3 root traits, including 7 QTLs for taproot thickness, 5 QTLs for taproot length, and 6 QTLs for taproot weight. Individually, the QTLs accounted for 8.4-27.4% of the phenotypic variation. The 2 major QTLs, qTRT4b for taproot thickness and qTRW4 for taproot weight, explained 27.4% and 24.8% of the total phenotypic variance, respectively. The QTLs for root traits, firstly detected in Brassica crops, may provide a basis for marker-assisted selection to improve productivity in root-crop breeding.
