The survival and growth rate of Atlantic sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrhynchus oxyrhynchus Mitchill, eggs and fry were tested in recirculation systems on rocky and gravel substrates. The observations were carried out until the beginning of exogenous feeding. In comparison to standard methods of egg incubation and fry rearing, survival was lower and growth rates were higher. At the end of the experiment, the average body length of larvae was higher in both substrate groups and lower in the control group.
The survival and growth rate of Atlantic sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrhynchus oxyrhynchus Mitchill, eggs and fry were tested in a recirculation system and in the Drwęca River on mineral substrate. In comparison to standard methods of egg incubation and fry rearing, survival was lower and the growth rate was higher. The survival rate of eggs incubated in the Drwęca River was comparable to natural survival rates noted in Canadian spawning grounds.
Experimental rearing of sterlet using forms with normal and albino coloring was conducted. The spawn was fertilized as follows: spawn from females with normal coloring were fertilized with milt obtained from males with normal coloring (group CC) and with that from albino males (group CB); spawn from albino females were fertilized with milt obtained from males with normal coloring (group BC) and with milt obtained from albino males (group BB). It was confirmed that the hatch inherited parental coloring; there were only individuals with dark coloring in group CC, while in group BB, there were only albino individuals. However, in groups BC and CB, in addition to the majority of individuals that inherited color, there were individuals of median coloring. The highest hatch survival rate was noted in group CC at 97.3%, and the lowest was noted in group CB at 94.8%. The hatch with albino coloring had the slowest growth rate.
Attaching transmitters to fish is the most common procedure performed on free-ranging fish. Telemetry with either acoustic or high frequency radio transmitters is an essential tool for the study of fish behavior. This paper describes protocols for the efficient surgical implantation of telemetry transmitters in fish. Sturgeon were tagged with internal radio or acoustic transmitters (weight in air 0.6-12 g). This paper summarizes the knowledge and research results of transmitter impact on species taking into consideration morphology, the surgical procedure and transmitter attachment method, the tag mass to body mass ratio, and the expulsion of implanted tags.
