The purpose of this paper was to confront some selected physiological parameters that describe aerobic capacity with young swimmers’ sports achievements. For the study, some athletes with the average age of 14.67, who train swimming at the SMS Szczecin Club, were selected. A progressive test of their oxygen power was performed in order to determine their aerobic capacity, with the means of the European Ranking (LEN). Each swimmer’s sports level was presented in points [pts.]. The swimmers’ characteristics were presented as divided into three groups: (S) – short-distance specialization, (M) – medium-distance specialization and (L) – longdistance specialization. In group (S), maximum oxygen consumption – VO2max [l/min] achieved the levels of 3.95 [l/min] (male swimmers) and 2,77 [l/min] (female swimmers); in group (M) – 4.12 [l/min] and 2.97 [l/min], respectively; and in group (L) – 4.14 [l/min] and 3.338 [l/min]. Among male swimmers, level of VO2max [ml/kg/min] equaled 58.96 – group (S), 59.72 – group (M) and 62.10 – group (L); while among female swimmers it reached 48.67 (S), 49.36 (M) and 54.60 (L), respectively. The recorded values of VO2max [ml/kg/min] qualify the young swimmers to the group of people with a very high physical capacity. Our selection of Szczecin’s athletes to individual groups proved to be correct. The considerations presented in the paper bring one’s attention to the substantive quality of the intake and selection of swimmers. In the selection, it is necessary to take such physiologic rates as VO2max or VO2/HR into consideration.
Background. Men are less than women interested in nutrition and health. Also low is their nutritional knowledge. More than 25% of men are unwilling to increase their knowledge about food and nutrition. The main sources of men’s knowledge about lifestyle including nutrition consist of Internet, colleagues and family. The low level of knowledge about nutrition and health among men is worrying especially in the context of their incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular disease, higher than in women. Objective. The aim of the study was to determine the level of knowledge on nutrition and health among young men. Material and Methods. The study included 107 men aged 19-34 years from different places and backgrounds in Poland. Men were selected by the snowball method. The study was conducted using an authors’ validated questionnaire containing six types of closed questions (85 detailed questions in total). For statistical analysis Chi2 test was used (p≤0.05). Results. Almost 42% of men under the study were overweight or obese, and less than ¼ declared high physical activity, most showed (on a 4-point scale) sufficient (45%) or low level (40%) of knowledge of nutrition and health. Younger respondents had higher knowledge than older ones. Very low was the respondent’s awareness of an energy content of products, sources of high quality protein and amount of recommended vegetable and fruit consumption. The well-known were the reasons for civilisation diseases and the effect of dietary fibre. The internet was the main source of nutritional knowledge and health related information followed by: colleagues and family. Conclusions. The majority of men presented sufficient or low knowledge about food, nutrition and their relation to health. Young men should be encouraged to participate in various forms of nutritional and health education. This would increase the chance to avoid civilisation diseases.
Background. Keeping to a balanced diet plays a key role in maximizing the body’s efficiency so that sports training becomes more effective. Previous studies have shown that an athletes’ diet is often not properly balanced, and can thus negatively affect sporting performance. Objectives. To assess the energy and nutrient intake in young men practicing aerobic sport and compare them with those recommended. Material and methods. Subjects were 25 male athletes, aged 19-25 years, practicing aerobic sports who were students at two Warsaw Universities; The Military University of Technology and University of Physical Education. The average body mass was 80.6 ± 9.6 kg and average height was 187.0 ± 7.6 cm, (BMI thus being 23.01 ± 1.70 kg/m2). Dietary assessment was based on three-day dietary recalls consisting of two weekdays and one day of the weekend. The energy and macro/ micro-nutrient intake were evaluated using the Polish Software ‘Energia’ package and compared to recommendations and standards. Supplements were absent from the athletes’ diets. Results. The energy value of diets were too low in most instances; average %-age deficiency was 30.22 ± 13.76%. Total protein intake, (mean 1.41 ± 0.36 g per kg body weight) was inadequate in 40% of cases, whilst all showed appropriate intakes of animal protein. Most subjects’ carbohydrate intake (84%) was deficient; median 3.28 g/kg body weight. Fibre intake, (median 17.17 g) was also insufficient in 76% cases. Total fat intake, (33,9% ± 5,7 energy) was too high in 32% of cases. The %-age dietary energy obtained from saturated fatty acids was 12,18% ± 2,53 and 5,72% ± 1,43 from polyunsaturated fatty acids, where most subjects’ diet (64%) was, as well, high in cholesterol. Furthermore, significant deficiencies were observed in the following: Vitamin A (44% of group below EAR), vitamin C (80% below EAR), vitamin D (92% below EAR), foliate (84% below EAR), calcium (52% below EAR) and magnesium (60% below EAR). Vitamin E intake was however higher than the AI level. Almost all subjects had adequate intakes of vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin and zinc. Conclusions. The energy value of diet and carbohydrate intake were inadequate to the athletes’ requirements. Dietary deficiencies of folate, vitamins C and D, magnesium, calcium and potassium were also observed. There is therefore a need for sports nutrition counselling and education which would help athletes improve their eating habits and health, as well as for optimising their sports training performance.
Idiopathic scoliosis (IS), despite multidirectional therapy, involves a significant impairment of the quality of life of the patients. It is caused by pain syndromes frequently accompanying IS, the etiology of which has not been entirely discovered. The present research on environmental factors predisposing to pain syndromes in girls with IS involved analysis of 54 girls under ambulatory care, aged 14-17 (on average 15.3-years-old ±0.99). The patients’ natural environment was analysed, including time spent in a sedentary position during the day, sleeping time, time spent on physical activity during the week, regularity of meals consumed, as well as the quantitative composition of the diet. The research also concerned the location and characteristics of ailment reported, as well as pain intensity on the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). It was found that the most frequent locations of back pain were: lumbar section – in 28 persons (51.9% of the examined population), and thoracic section of the spine – in 21 persons (38.9% of the examined population). Pain occurring at the same time in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar sections of the spine was reported for 4 persons (7.4% of the examined population). Fifty girls (92.6%) were aware of controlling their body posture, and 23 persons (42.6%) were able to correct it. The group of girls under examination suffering from pain in the lumbar section of the spine was characterized by a longer period of retaining a sedentary position, less time dedicated to any therapeutic rehabilitation programme, higher intensity of pain, and a higher average age than the group with pain in the thoracic section of the spine. The research proved that patients with pain syndrome located in the lumbar part of the spine were characterized by more time spent in a sedentary position, less time spent on a therapeutic rehabilitation programme, higher intensity of pain and a higher average age than the group suffering from pain in the thoracic section of the spine. The lifestyles of the patients under examination and their lack of awareness of the need to control the body posture can affect the type and intensity of pain.
Background. Adequate nutrition and energy intake play key rule during the training period and recovery time. The assessment of athlete’s energetic needs should be calculated individually, based on personal energy expenditure and Sense Wear PRO3 Armband (SWA) mobile monitor is a useful tool to achieve this goal. However, there is still few studies conducted with use of this monitor. Objectives. To assess individual energy needs of athletes by use of SWA and to determine whether their energy intake fulfils the body’s energy expenditure. Material and Methods. Subjects were 15 male students attending Military University of Technology in Warsaw, aged 19-24 years, practicing aerobic. The average body mass was 80.7 ± 7.7 kg and average height was 186.9 ± 5.2 cm, (BMI 23.09 ± 1.85 kg/m2). Assessment of physical activity and energy expenditure (TEE) was established using SWA, which was placed on the back side of dominant hand and worn continuously for 48 hours (during the training and non-training day). The presented results are the average values of these 2 days. Assessment of athletes’ physical activity level was established by use of metabolic equivalent of task (MET) and number of steps (NS). Estimation of energy intake was based on threeday dietary recalls (two weekdays and one day of the weekend), evaluated using the Polish Software ‘Energia’ package. Results. The average TEE of examined athletes was 3877 ± 508 kcal/day and almost half of this energy was spend on physical activity (1898 ± 634 kcal/day). The number of steps was on average 19498 ± 5407 and average MET was 2.05 ± 2.09. The average daily energy intake was 2727 ± 576 kcal. Conclusions. Athletes consumed inadequate amount of energy in comparison to their energy expenditure. Examined group did not have an adequate knowledge about their energy requirement, which shows the need of nutritional consulting and education among these athletes.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of air pollution on pulmonary function parameters in healthy non-smoking young men. The study comprised 1,278 healthy, non-smoking young men (aged 18-23) living in Poland in regions with different levels of air pollution. The examined population was divided into three groups A, B, and C, based on low, moderate and high air pollution levels, respectively. Spirometry and bodyphletysmography at rest were performed by using of mobile lab PNEUMOBIL. Lung function parameters were analyzed and compared with respect to the level of air pollution. The mean values of the pulmonary function parameters were within the limits in all groups, but we observed statistically significant differences between the groups (lowest mean values in group C and the highest in group A). In all groups we found persons with significant airflow limitation in the central and peripheral bronchi, defined as the decrease of FEV1%FVC ratio <70 and FEV1<80% of predicted value (central bronchi), and FEV1%FVC ratio >70, FEF50<70% predicted (peripheral bronchi). The percentage of persons with airflow limitation in the central bronchi was in group A (0.3%), B (0.4%) and C (1.4%). The incidence of flow limitation in small bronchi was as follows: in group A (1.2%), B (0.5%) and C (6.7%). The majority of factors defining the capacity of lungs as well as the intensity of the airflow showed a negative correlation with the concentrations of the basic air pollution (SO2, NO2, PM10). Our study showed, for the first time, the influence of air pollution on pulmonary function parameters in healthy non-smoking young men in the Polish population.
The aim of the study was to find out whether prolonged exercise influences plasma adrenomedullin (ADM) concentration and whether it is related to the hormonal, metabolic and cardiovascular changes. Eighteen healthy subjects (age 25±1 yrs) were submitted to cycle exercise for 90 min at 70% of maximal oxygen uptake. Heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) were measured continously. Before, at 30th min, and at the end of exercise venous blood samples were taken for [ADM], noradrenaline [NA], adrenaline [A], atrial natriuretic peptide [ANP], plasma renin activity PRA, interleukin-6 [IL-6] and lactate [LA] determination. Significant increases in plasma ADM and IL-6 were found at 90th min whereas other hormones were elevated already at 30th min of exercise. Positive correlations were ascertained between [ADM] and [NA] (r=0.47), [ANP] (r=0.35) or [IL-6] (r=0.35) and between exercise-induced increases in [ADM] and [NA] (r=0.38). PRA correlated positively with [NA] and [ANP]. Negative correlation was found between plasma [ADM] and diastolic BP. The present data suggest that increase in sympathetic nervous activity and cytokine induction during prolonged exercise may be involved in plasma ADM release and that increase in ADM and ANP secretion may be a compensatory mechanism against further elevation of blood pressure.
Endurance training is considered as a factor impairing orthostatic tolerance although an improvement and lack of effect have been also reported. The mechanisms of the changes and their relation to initial tolerance of orthostasis are not clear. In the present study, effect of moderate running training on hemodynamic and neurohormonal changes during LBNP, a laboratory test simulating orthostasis, was investigated in subjects with high (HT) and low (LT) tolerance of LBNP. Twenty four male, healthy subjects were submitted to graded LBNP (-15, -30 and -50 mmHg) before and after training. During each test heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV) and blood pressure, plasma catecholamines, ACTH, adrenomedullin, atrial natriuretic peptide, and renin activity were determined. Basing on initial test, 13 subjects who withstood LBNP at -50 mmHg for 10 min were allocated into HT group and 11 subjects who earlier showed presyncopal symptoms to LT group. Training improved LBNP tolerance in six LT subjects. This was associated with attenuated rate of HR increase and SV decline (before training, at -30 mmHg DHR was 21 ± 4 beats/min and SV – -36± 8 ml while after training the respective values were 8 ± 4 beats/min and -11± 6 ml). No differences in hemodynamic response were found in HT subjects and those from LT group whose LBNP tolerance was unchanged. In neither group training affected neurohormonal changes except inhibition of plasma ACTH rise in subjects with improvement of LBNP tolerance. It is concluded that some subjects with low orthostatic tolerance may benefit from moderate training due to improvement of cardiac function regulation.
Trzyletnia ocena żywienia studentów wykazała niezbilansowanie racji pokarmowych z zapotrzebowaniem pod względem zawartości produktów i składników odżywczych. Zmiany zaobserwowane w czasie mogą nasilać ryzyko wystąpienia niedoborów mineralno-witaminowych przy równocześnie silnie zaznaczonych cechach aterogenności racji pokarmowych.
Badano wpływ suplemenatacji na profil kwasów tłuszczowych w fosfolipidach osocza krwi młodych kobiet i mężczyzn. Zaobserwowano statystycznie istotne zmiany w składzie kwasów tłuszczowych: spadek zawartości kwasów nasyconych i wzrost stężenia wielonienasyconych kwasów tłuszczowych. Suplementacja cynkiem dziennej racji pokarmowej osób zdrowych może wpływać na profil kwasów tłuszczowych, w tym również LCPUFA.
Badano wpływ mono glutaminianu sodu (MSG) na rozwój, intensywność i czas trwania zjawiska sytości sensorycznie specyficznej oraz pobranie energii u młodych osób obojga płci. Wykazano, że dodatek do makaronu z sosem 0,25% MSG nie miał istotnego wpływu na pobranie energii z tym posiłkiem, które było istotnie wyższe u mężczyzn niż u kobiet. Spożycie makaronu z sosem bolońskim bez lub z dodatkiem MSG wywołało zjawisko sytości sensorycznie specyficznej o podobnym natężeniu i czasie trwania u badanych osób niezależnie od płci.
