Companies’ reaction to crisis events occurring in economy is, as a rule, decreasing operating costs and constraining investment projects. It results mainly from the passive attitude of the management in the face of the crisis. Only companies in good financial condition can invest in times of economic stagnation. The following article presents changes in the level of financial outlays for investment in wood sector companies (with the following businesses: paper and paper products manufacture, wood, cork, straw and wicker products manufacture, furniture production) compared to processing industry.
Innovative activity is a key aspect in functioning of a company. Growth of competition resulting from market globalization, as well as a growing number of new customer expectations in the economic crisis force companies to look for new innovative solutions. However, deciding on innovation introduction needs to be economically justified from the perspective of the company. In the paper, economic aspects of innovative activity of companies functioning in the wood sector, compared to processing industry, have been presented.

The paper presents an analysis of the trends of innovative activities of enterprises in the wood-processing sector. Innovative activities in the wood sector to large extent are limited to modernisation of production lines. Lack of own resources is an important obstacle to innovation, as well as belief of entrepreneurs that those improvements are not efficacy. In the future innovative activities will depend to a large extend on the level of the utilisation of the EU funds within the targeted framework programs.
The last world financial crisis has had a noticeable impact on the wood sector in Poland. As a result companies have to deal with difficulties that have arisen in foreign trade and on labour market. One solution is to introduce some new activities into company and create a new image which may lead to an increase in competitiveness. For wood sector companies such solution can be the use of wood biomass for energy purposes. Wood waste which is a side product of wood processing may be used for energy purposes in the company that creates it or may be sold as this company’s product to power stations.
Changes that have been occurring for a few years in the modern world as a result of the global economic crisis, cause doubts as to the possibility and correctness of implementation to economic practice of theoretical concepts suggested by economics. However, a belief prevails that in the case of macroeconomic phenomena the possibilities of empirical verification of developed theories will always be limited due to changeability and complexity of economic phenomena that are very difficult to isolate from other social phenomena. A multidisciplinary approach, and especially taking into consideration economic issues in connection with technical issues, is especially needed in so-called industry economics, including the wood industry economics. The issues of innovativeness, knowledge transfer and implementation of innovative scientific and research solutions in business sphere have an important place in this process. The fact that the wood industries are based on a natural raw material offered by forestry, which raw material is a national good to some extent, results in the situation where the whole society should express their opinion on the rationality of this raw material use. Such a possibility was offered by a foresight project concerning the Polish wood industry.
