This article describes the changes in the land cover and management of floodplains in towns located on Poland’s Oder River, estimates flood risk and how it has been changing in these towns, and how these changes have affected the environment. The paper also includes an analysis of trends in floodplain management defined in local planning documents. The research was conducted for the period of 1995-2010 and included two towns: Kostrzyn on the Oder and Krosno Odrzańskie. The former lies in the lower course of the Oder and the latter in its middle section. The research indicates that flood risk has risen due to the continuous development of urbanized areas (both unbuilt and built-up) that used to be exploited as arable land. That had a negative effect on the environment, as well.

The paper discusses the development of chess on the territory of the Częstochowa Voivodeship, which existed in the years 1975–1998. The content of the text relates primarily to activities of the Regional Chess Association in Częstochowa established in 1976, as well as to successes of chess players. Not only representatives of Częstochowa clubs were successful, but also those of clubs located in neighbouring communes and towns. These were successes at both all-Poland and international events.

The macroeconomic efficiency of a public library in a small town near Warsaw has been calculated in the form of benefit/cost ratio. The benefits have been estimated by the method of contingent valuation of the library services and by the revealed preferences expressed by the costs of travel to and from the library as well as the costs of library deposit fees. The macroeconomic costs have been assumed equal to the microeconomic costs, except for labour costs which have been estimated as social opportunity costs of labour and therefore corrected downwards because of the persistent unemployment in town. The BCR ratio turned to be far below zero (depending on assumptions varied between 0.37 and 0.76). However only the direct benefits accruing to the library customers have been included.
As a result of research conducted by the author, there were 120,200 hectares of areas identified in Polish cities that require regeneration, which constitutes a little more than 21% of all invested and urbanized areas. In terms of surface area and frequency of occurrence, the main problem is the one, which concerns old downtown districts. Drab prefabricated towerblock housing estates which, according to many municipal authorities are in a crisis, occupy a much smaller surface area of 14,000 hectares, yet the number of their residents approximates that of the old downtown districts and amounts to ca. 2.1 million people. The conducted research shows that there are 4.4 million people, who live presently in degraded areas and in areas that need to be regenerated. Also 24,000 hectares of post-industrial areas were identified. Other estimates indicate that there may even be twice as much of those post-industrial areas (40,000 hectares) but due to their contained nature and limited accessibility municipal authorities are not always aware of their existence. Based on the estimates of PKP S.A. Railways authorities one can assume that already today ca. 15,000 hectares of post-railway areas might be subjected to regeneration and reuse, including 100 multi-mode railway stations, which are critical for urban development. In 140 Polish cities and towns there were ca. 11,800 hectares of post-military areas identified, the majority of which have already been developed or adapted for urban purposes. Still there remain ca. 4,000 hectares of areas that require specific actions.
