Experiments were carried out in the years 2003-2005 on the effect of mulching with pine bark and spring cutting of shoots of selected rose cultivars (‘Nozomi’, ‘Alba Meidiland’, ‘The Fairy’, ‘Rote Max Graf’, ‘Sommerabend’) on the nutritional status of plants. In the successive years of growing, different rose shrub groups of each cultivar were cut back. The soil under shrubs was mulched with pine bark. The mulch layer was 5 and 10 cm thick. A slight differentiation in the analyzed results between the cut back and uncut roses and mulched and non-mulched ones, indicates a very limited effect of applied treatments on the nutritional status of tested plants. Because of the significant divergences in the currently valid critical values of microelements characterizing nutritional status of roses, a modification of the values is required. It refers in particular to the recommended contents of nitrogen and potassium.
