Used in various industries, cadmium penetrates the environment. Large quantities of cadmium occur in the Baltic waters. This metal is detected in proteins in fish, seals, birds, and especially in molluscs. It has an adverse impact on living cells. It is considered one of the most toxic elements. A tenfold increase in its content recorded in the Baltic is a serious threat to the whole environment of this sea. The authors discuss harmful effects of cadmium, the reasons of increased environmental pollution with this element, methods of controlling the increase in cadmium contamination, and ways to gradually abate it.
