Economic and environmental aspects of generating energy from renewable sources in various forms: thermal, electric and mechanical have been presented in this article. Utilization of those resources and their promotion has been imposed on us by the climate convention but substantial level of pollution in large cities of our country contributed to that as well. RES share in the production of electricity and heating in Poland is regulated centrally by the directive of Minister of Economy. RES utilization is gradually becoming more rational in our country. It levels the prices of biomass for energy sector which has a visible impact on the level of round wood prices in Poland.
The preliminary operational and functional research on a set of photovoltaic panels with power of 12.88 kW operating since June 2012 was conducted. The economic and energetic analysis of the research stand and its practical suitability for a small family farm in order to use the generated electric power for the farm’s current demands. The research results have shown that the amount of electric power generated by photovoltaic panels would be enough to cooperate with other renewable energy sources (e.g. power supply of heat pumps) collecting and processing heat from livestock buildings or from ground heat exchangers to make warm tap water and to heat up buildings. In a period from June 2012 to June 2013 there was generated electric power of 10480 kWh with an average power of 813.7 kWp/year (kilowatt peak per year) of one module of the panel. The panel was inclined at an angle of 20° to the Earth’s axis and at an angle of 210° to the north (as per the compass rose: S-S-W direction).
The limitations in electrical energy consumption in summer 2015 highlighted the need to support alternative energy sources in rural areas. Their use could have been supported throughout the country; however, only rural areas have rich supplies of biomass, the most accessible renewable energy source (uninfl uenced by weather conditions). The paper’s aim was to analyse major objectives and thematic areas of 60 local development strategies from the Małopolskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships. The assessment was conducted with respect to the strategic goals directed towards the use of renewable energy sources in rural areas. The investigated strategies, prepared by local action groups (LAG), covered the period of 2007–2013. The organizations were also examined in the research regarding their 2014–2020 development plans by means of an online survey. Renewable energy sources (RES) were included in detailed objectives or thematic fields in 50% of the examined 2007–2013 strategies. None of the major objectives of the investigated strategies touched upon renewable energy. Rural areas have the potential to increase their energy security; however, it requires adequate strategy and funds. Financial support for RES investment should be higher in those cases where biomass and flowing waters can be used. The organizations subject to the analysis put too little priority on the use of biomass and its local processing, allocating financial resources to solar thermal collectors and photovoltaics.
“Chosen gas generators with solid bed for the production of wood gas”. The gas generators with solid bed and the possibilities of usage of these devices for the production of wood gas were presented in this paper. An analysis that was supposed to define the benefits and drawbacks of various technologies used during the production of wood gas with gas generators with solid bed was conducted.
The purpose of this article is to present a compost heap as the method of using an energy produced in the composting process on an agri-tourism farm. In the first part of the paper the characteristics of renewable energy sources in selected countries of the European Union have been presented. For this purpose, data has been used which is provided in the document titled „Energy from renewable sources in 2012” made available by the Central Statistical Office. In the further part of this article, the use of a compost pile on agri-tourism farm for water heating has been presented. The heat is produced in a compost heap and “waste” created in this process is a valuable natural fertilizer, which is useful in the agricultural works and ecological garden.
Bio-economy requires the participation that engages societies, including the local communities. In this context, the aim of the study is to recognize the opinion of the local community regarding the legitimacy of the use of existing local renewable energy potential, which will take the appropriate actions in the field of RES for the full implementation of the bio-economy program. The study assumed that a considerable degree of acceptance of renewable energy sources can be a powerful argument in order to confirm the thesis that as a result of income growth and consumer demand the multiplier effect of the use of RES will appear, contributing to local development. The tests were performed using factual methods. Secondary research, indirect (desk research), carried out in the process of exploring the problem. Field research, direct primary research, enabled the acquisition of primary data to enable the implementation of the targets. In examining the opinions of the populations of krośnieńsko-przemyski area sought to determine the relationship between the local community to the possibility of the use of renewable energy sources at the local level. Recognized opinions allowed to determine whether there is approval, disapproval, or no opinion on the use of renewable energy sources. Substantial increase in the share of RES technologies in the surveyed communes of Przemysl and Krosno sub-regions should be based on agricultural biomass, forest biomass, wind energy, geothermal energy, and solar energy. Tested communities have different often divergent opinions as to the validity of the use of RES on the local level, nevertheless a large interest in modern technologies and renewable sources of their funding is observed. The local community in the majority wants to pursue undertakings in the field of renewable energy, mainly based on solar and wind energy. There is a need to further identify and develop local potentials, including the use of social energy from renewable sources.
Civilizational development requires seeking for more and more modern methods of satisfying growing needs of the society. Living standards grow together with economic growth and, as a result, demand for energy grows as well. This fact is tantamount with the necessity to look for alternative energy sources. Otherwise, our civilization will soon have to face degradation of natural environment and shortage of conventional energy resources. Under Polish conditions, crucial role in utilizing renewable energy is played by biomass, and its importance is going to grow over the years. The present study has assessed productivity of three willow clones: Tur, Ekotur and Turbo, grown in short rotations on farmland.
Various activities are undertaken worldwide in order to counteract the visible climate changes. One of them is promotion of renewable energy sources. Aims established by the European Commission with respect to increasing the share of energy obtained from RES assume an average increase of up to 20% by the year 2020. Poland, as an EU member state has been obliged to increase the share of energy from RES to 15%. Promoting renewable energy sources contributes to diversification of supplies, thus providing conditions for the development of energetics at a local level. Taking into account Polish conditionings it is believed that biomass, including forest biomass, can be an important renewable energy source. The present study focuses on the problem of efficiency of energy wood chip production from forest biomass utilizing a Bandit 2090 wood chipper. Chipping efficiency, depending on the condition of particular tree stands, ranged from 14 to 17 m3·h-1.
In the paper three cases are presented and analysed, which show innovations in the use of woody biomass for the production of heat and woody fuel (pellets). In two of the firms analysed woody biomass boilers were installed, and in the third case a technological line for the production of pellets was assembled. The analysis was made based on information acquired during interviews conducted in the companies. Pro-innovative people, who acted as “innovation motors” in the companies contributed greatly to the success of the innovative undertakings. The financing of the innovations was the most important problem in the realization of the undertakings, and a possibility to use public funding played a significant role. The successfully implemented innovations contributed to an increase in competitiveness of the companies, which allowed to use locally available woody biomass resources and to reduce the emissions of pollutants and CO2 to the atmosphere.
This article investigates factors influencing knowledge of renewable energy types among 200 residents of 13 villages in Lubelskie province using survey data collected in 2013. Survey summary responses indicate that solar and wind energy were best known and biofuels the least known among five energy types considered in the questionnaire. Factors associated with varying degrees of renewable energy sources were identified using the multivariate ordered probit approach. The largest change in probability that a respondent’s self-assessed knowledge level fell into a specific category was associated with being a farmer, viewing the subject matter of the survey as important, having high income, being from a large household and, being married.
