The bio-economy, using biomass from various sources and in a wide range of sectors, has reached a significant scale in Europe. The current and the potential importance of the bio-economy is illustrated with data from Germany. While the potential uses of biomass are manifold, its availability is limited. This paper discusses the resulting competition for biomass and shows possibilities to increase the biomass-potential. To satisfy the increasing demand for biomass, further research in the forestry sector is needed.
The object of the research was to analyze the quality of glued elements in endurance tests. The pine wood used in the research originated from the vicinity of Sulechów. In the research the physical properties of the wood, such as density and humidity were analyzed. Within the framework of the research the endurance of laboratory samples was also tested. The research was conducted on laboratory samples. The results of the study are presented on illustrations and in tables.
Background. Through its use of ionising radiation, the field of nuclear medicine forms a unique and significant part of medical diagnostics and patient treatment. Objectives. To assess the operational potential of nuclear medicine in Poland based on existing database/literature sources together with conducting a survey on the relevant healthcare facilities available, staffing, expertise and performance. Material and Methods. To gather all available literature data on the medical use of ionising radiation in Poland several data bases were used, since currently, there are no single statistical data base devoted to this issue. Data on radiation hygiene were thus collected from the Statistical Bulletin of the Ministry of Health, Annual reports from the National Atomic Energy Agency and Central Statistics Office. Additionally, national and provincial reports were used, as well as those received from the European Society of Nuclear Medicine. Results. At present, the Public Healthcare system in Poland has 55 nuclear medicine departmental facilities operating and 8 that are private/non-public. These are staffed by 252 doctors, of whom 151are qualified as nuclear medicine specialists; constituting one specialist per 300,000 inhabitants. In addition, 170 highly qualified staff (biologists, chemists, physicists, electronics engineers and IT specialists) provide indispensable scientific/operational support and are vital for the development of nuclear medicine departments. They are mainly responsible for ensuring that all equipment functions effectively and for developing new diagnostic techniques, together with new radiopharmaceuticals. Furthermore, there are approximately 500 other staff at intermediate-level also involved in nuclear medicine departments, such as technicians, nurses and support workers. The survey demonstrated an average of 22 persons employed per nuclear medicine department. For all institutions, it is estimated that there are 127 gamma cameras, 10 PET/CT scanners and 16 hybrid SPECT/CT systems operating. In 2000, approximately 117,435 diagnostic procedures were performed, compared to 156,214 in 2008 and with the current number of around 170,000; up to 38% were simple thyroid scintigraphies, 25% were bone scans, 11% heart scintigraphies and 10% kidney scans. Conclusions. The number of diagnostic radioisotopic procedures in Poland are strongly expected to increase by 300% during the next 5-6 years. To meet this rise, additional equipment will thus be necessary, which includes having an extra 100 SPECT/CT gamma cameras.
This study examined the potential of liquid wild dog rose (Rosa canina) seeds oil and solid seeds residue obtained after CO2 extraction in supercritical conditions to mitigate rumen methane production in vitro. Two experiments were carried out. The substrate comprised of a mixture of meadow hay and barley meal (60:40) for the control diets (CON1 in experiment with oil and CON2 in experiment with residue). The control diets were supplemented up to 5% in dry matter of rose seeds oil (RO) and 5% of rose seeds residue (RR). The following parameters were measured: pH, ammonia, volatile fatty acids, ciliate protozoa and bacteria count, methane concentration and methanogens population. In the RO treatment a decrease in methane production and an increase in the Archea population were observed. In the RR treatment no change in methane production was reported, whereas some variations in protozoal populations were detected in relation to CON2. The potential to mitigate methane production was reported only in wild dog rose seeds oil treatment. Besides, no negative effect of wild dog rose seeds residue on rumen processes was stated, what may predispose this protein and fibre containing by-product to be utilized as ruminants dietary ingredient.
Microbial preparation of herbicide is defined as bioherbicide that can control the weed. In this approach, indigenous plant pathogens isolated from weeds are cultured to produce the large numbers of infective propagules which are applied at a rate that will cause high levels of infection leading to suppression of the target weed. During the present investigation, cell free culture filtrate (CFCF) of Alternaria alternata was evaluated for its phytotoxicity against a noxious weed Lantana camara. The results of cut shoot, seedling and detached leaf bioassays revealed the presence of a toxic metabolite in the CFCF and a significant reduction in chlorophyll and protein content were also noticed. Phytotoxic moiety was further purified and characterized by using solvent partition, thin layer chromatography (TLC), FTIR and 1H NMR analysis. The acetone extract induced maximum phytotoxic damage at a concentration of 100 μg/ml and TLC purified fraction also exhibited herbicidal potential. The toxic compound was identified as tenuazonic acid upon comparison with FTIR and 1H NMR spectra. This is the first evidence that confirmed the herbicidal potential of a biorational, tenuazonic acid was produced by submerged fermentation of A. alternata.
Over recent years, there has been increasing interest noted in those active substances derived from plants that show potential for preventing cancer development. The most promising candidate is resveratrol which can be found in large amounts in the skin of grapes, tomatoes and in red wine. Its beneficial effects on the human body are seen both in prevention and therapy. The anti-carcinogenic action of resveratrol is linked with its ability to neutralise reactive oxygen species and to modulate cellular processes such as apoptosis, and both cancerous cell proliferation and differentiation. This article presents the characteristics of resveratrol as a bioactive compound derived from natural sources exhibiting anti-cancer properties, which, because of a wide spectrum of biological activities may be used in the prevention of cancer. Many in vitro and animal-based studies have demonstrated such preventative anti-cancer action in the colon, prostate, breast and lungs. The beneficial effects of resveratrol are also presented when adopted as a support to conventional treatments of cancer using chemo- and radio-therapy.
Central and Eastern Europe is undergoing a period of extensive transformation. Over the past few years, most countries of the region have made progress in the transition to a competitive market economy, macroeconomic stabilisation and structural reform. The study will survey the current agricultural problems in ten countries which are preparing for integration to the European Union. Firstly, there is a brief statistical description of agriculture both in the ten Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs) and in the Member States. Its role in the overall economy on the basis of agricultural potential, employment, gross value added and trade is presented. Then trends in agricultural production and productivity through national factor combinations as well as self-sufficiency in agricultural products of the CEECs were examined.
