Three hundred and thirty eight pigs infested with roundworms and scab mites were treated with moxidectin at the dose of 0.3 mg per 1 kg of body weight. The examinations were carried out on 13 farms. The drug was effective against scabies mites, Strongyloides ransomi, Oesophagostomum dentatum, Trichuris suis, and effectively limited the intensity and extensiveness of Ascaris suum invasion. The rearing conditions did not influence the effectiveness of roundworm elimination in the treated pigs. In case of Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis reinvasions were observed at 56 days after the therapy only on the farms where the animals were reared in closed cycles.
In contrast to the occurrence of hermaphroditic individuals as a reproductive strategy, which is observed in many fish species, intersexuality in sturgeon populations is considered pathological. The presence of intersex individuals has been reported for almost all sturgeon species, for both wild and cultured populations. Intersex individuals usually constitute a small percentage of wild populations. Intersexuality in wild populations is thought to be caused by pollution of the environment with Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDC). Intersex individuals have also been found in cultured populations of various sturgeon species. In aquaculture, the high percentage of intersex individuals is probably partly due to the high content of soy and other phytoestrogen-rich plants in the diet of the sturgeon.
The aim of this study was to show different methods for the recognition of abnormalities in the determination of fenotypical, gonadal and chromosomal sex such as hermaphroditism in dogs. The subject of examination was a 9-month-old Yorkshire terrier with clinical signs of hermaphroditism. Clinical examination led to a definition of fenotypical sex and coexisting dysgenesis (perineal hypospadias). Clinical examination appeared insufficient for recognition of the type of hermaphroditism, additional tests needed to be conducted to reach the full diagnosis. Ultrasonographic examination, hormonal profile, diagnostic laparotomy, as well as a histopathological examination, were performed in order to define the gonadal sex. Chromosomal sex was defined on the basis of karyotyping.
