The effect of different levels of naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and benzyladenine (BA) on shoot multiplication and regeneration of Petunia hybrida was studied. Regenerated shoots from leaf explants were grown ex vitro for analysis of somaclonal variation. Seeds of Petunia hybrida were germinated in vitro on MS basal medium. The seedlings were used as a source of explants for the multiplication and regeneration experiments. For the shoot multiplication experiment, shoot explants taken from germinated seedlings were cultured on MS basal media supplemented with different concentrations of BA (0.1, 0.4, 0.8 mgl-1) and NAA at concentration of 0.1 mg l-1. Highest number of axillary shoot was obtained on medium supplemented with 0.8 mg l-1 BA and 0.1 mgl-1NAA. For regeneration experiments, leaf sections taken from germinated seedlings were cultured onto MS media supplemented with three levels of BA (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mgl-1) and 0.5 mgl-1NAA. The highest shoot regeneration rate (45%) was observed in MS medium supplemented with 2 mg l-1 BA. For the evaluation of somaclonal variation, lateral bud explants were taken from pink colored petunia plants that were grown in the greenhouse. The buds were disinfected and cultured on MS basal media supplied with 30 mgl-1 gentamycin sulfate and 30 mg l-1 Benlate. After shoots grew, leaf sections were then taken from them shoots and cultured onto shoot regeneration medium (MS medium supplemented with 2 mg l-1 BA). The regenerated adventitious shoots were cultured on MS medium without growth regulator. These shoots were then rooted, acclimatized and transferred to the greenhouse for evaluation. Two forms of leaf shape (orbicular and elliptic) and three flower colors (violet, purple and light pink) appeared on the plantlets.
A field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different plant growth regulators (PGRs) applied through seed priming and foliar spray on growth and yield of three okra cultivars grown under calcareous soils. The cultivars of Punjab Selection and Sabzpari produced significantly higher number of branches and leaves per plant, pod length and diameter and pod yield as compared to cv. Green ferry, while, cv. Punjab selection produced significantly greater number of flowers and pods per plant as compared to other two cultivars. Seed germination (%), plant height, and fruit set (%) were not affected by the cultivars. Among the PGR treatments, seed primed with GA3 resulted in significantly higher germination percentage and greater plant height at flowering. Seed priming and foliar spray with NAA and GA3 were effective in increasing the final plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, number of flowers and number of pods per plant and fruit set (%), fresh weight per pod and pod yield. However, pod diameter, pod moisture content and dry weight per pod were not influenced by the PGR treatments applied. These results suggested that the PGRs have great potential to improve seed germination, enhance growth and increase yield of okra cultivars under calcareous soils.
A field experiment was carried out during 2017–2018 in the Horticulture Research Station farm in El Kanater El Khayreia, El Kalubeia Governorate, Egypt, to find out the response of foliar application of melatonin, GA3 and NAA on vegetative and fruit attributes of ‘Canino’ apricot. Different plant growth regulators influenced all variable parameters related to vegetative growth and fruit. Results revealed that between all growth regulators, the foliar application of melatonin following by GA3 there was the highest vegetative growth as compared to other treatments, while GA3 gave the highest yield following by melatonin as compared to other treatments. Treatment with NAA improved vegetative growth, yield and fruit quality to a lesser extent as compared to the control.
NAA, carbaryl and ethephon were applied separately or in mixture or additionaly with SADH on the Golden Delicious trees, in five experiments, with the aim of regulating fruiting and increase fruit size. The best results were obtained after treatment with carbaryl at conc. 2500-3000 ing/L separately or with the mixture of carbaryl and NAA at conc. 1500 and 40 mg/L, respectively. These chemicals in general caused succesful thinning and increased fruit size. The lower yield was recompensed by higher quality of apples. The results after treatments with carbaryl in mixture with NAA were comparable to those after hand thinning. NAA increased of apple size effectively also, but only at conc. 40 mg/L or higher. However at conc. higher than 40 mg/L the chemical caused injuries of the leaves and youngest shoots. NAA applied separately was less effective than in the mixture with carbaryl. Ethephon at conc. 400 mg/L, applied 14 days after blooming, caused succesful thinning in general and increased fruit size but to a smaller degree than the other chemicals. However ethephon applied in mixture with NAA increased size similarly as hand thinning. In subsequent year the trees sprayed with the mixture of ethephon and NAA yielded abundantly and the apples were smaller than control onces, consequently. Ethephon applied jointly with carbaryl didn't increase the fruit size in spite of the reduction their number. The mixture of ethephon and SADH caused succesful thinning and increased the fruit size in the year of thinning. But in subsequent year the apples were smaller than in control as a consequence of higher yield.
