Fine particulate organic matter (FPOM), originated by aggregation of smaller particles and by decomposition of bigger particles, usually presents the dominant energy and nutrient source in the primary river net. Relationships between detrital components, environmental factors and macroinvertebrate composition were investigated in 52 submontane organogenic spring areas in small catchment in the Šumava foothills, Czech Republic. All three types of springs (helocrenes rheocrenes and limnocrenes) were represented, as well as springs with the transitional character. The selected springs were permanent, with water discharge higher than 0.1 L s-1, they all were coldwater and stenothermic, with the winter water temperature at the point of the source ranging from 2.0 to 9.9°C. At each spring area, the main morphological and physical characteristics of the spring and surrounding area were recorded. Samples of detritus were collected (using the 2 mL sampling tube) from up to 5 microhabitats at each spring, usually macrophyte vegetation, point of the source, detrital deposition, sand, algal mat, leaf litter or moss, accordingly to the microhabitats, which were present. Macroinvertebrates were semiquantitatively sampled using a 15-cm circular sampler with 0.8 mm mesh, to the orders or lower taxa were determined. Water samples were taken, and analyses of the main physico-chemical factors were carried out. In our set of springs, organic substrate prevailed. Only small differences in the physico-chemical parameters (e.g. pH = 5.96 ± 0.39; mean ± SD) and low concentrations of nutrients (e.g. N-NO3 - = 0.79 ± 0.86 mg L-1, ortho-PPO4 - = 0.0336 ± 0.0275 mg L-1) were noted, whereas studied geomorphological parameters and microhabitat types were more diverse. The proportion of basic microscopically differentiable components of the detritus was similar in all spring types and microhabitats. In all study sites, faecal pellet content was dominant in the detritus (49%) followed by plant residuals (26%) and amorphous matter (21%). High faecal pellet content is considered to be a consequence of a steadily low temperature in the springs. The correlation among the presence of macroinvertebrate groups and particular detrital components content was not significant, except for Trichoptera; the abundance of this group was positively correlated with the proportion of plantv residuals in detritus in vegetation microhabitats. Faecal pellet content showed a weak negative correlation with N-NH4 concentration, which is probably the result of faster faecal pellet decomposition in springs with higher N-NH4 contents.
Wide patches of fruiting Carex pulicaris L. (subatlantic element in Polish flora) were found in the Myrico-Salicetum sphagnetosum Pass. 1961 var. Molinia caerulea association, within the wetland area in Western Pomerania (Poland). Field observations included measurements of ground-waters, reaction of soil and seasonally stagnant waters, the height of Molinia caerulea tufts and also floral and phytosociological observations. Microhabitats of Carex pulicaris were tufts formed both by dead and living parts of Molinia caerulea. Artificially regulated level of inundation waters of local rivers had influence on site conditions suitable for Carex pulicaris. Distribution of Carex pulicaris within the area of investigations was connected with Molinia caerulea occurrence.
Fluorescent paint powders have frequently been used to determine the spatial activity patterns and microhabitat use of small mammals. The time of day that powdered animals were released differs among studies and data used in many studies were collected on the trails of powdered animals released in the morning outside the normal period of activity of many species of small mammals. We tested for differences in the characteristics of fluorescent powder trails of white-footed mice Peromyscus leucopus (Rafmesque, 1818) released using three protocols: night capture-night release, morning capture-morning release, and morning capture-delayed night-release. The night release and morning release protocols were established to replicate the extremes found in the literature. We added the third protocol to evaluate how capturing mice in the morning, holding them in captivity, and releasing them at night affected their use of microhabitat. There were no significant differences in the use of microhabitat between the night release and delayed night-release treatments. However, a significantly greater proportion of the trails of mice released in the morning were in areas of thick cover and under logs than the trails of mice released at night. Because mice released during the day used microhabitat differently than mice released at night, we caution against the interpretation of data on use of habitat collected using the fluorescent powder trails of animals released outside their normal period of activity.
This paper presents some results of a 8 year (1995-2002) observation of Liparis loeselii population in the nature reserve ‘Mielno’. The total population numbers as well as generative and vegetative ones differ from year to year. The population grew from 73 in 1995 to 106 in 1997, falling to 29 in 2002. At the same time unfavourable changes in population environment (progressive drainage of the area and expansion of woody plants) have been observed.
Floristic studies were carried out in eight botanical gardens in Poland in the years 1992-1999. It was demonstrated that the spontaneous synanthropic flora of the gardens consisted of 1092 taxa in the rank of a genus or lower, among which alien species constituted 55% of the flora studied. Ergasiophygophytes, of which the introduction is closely associated with the activities of the botanical gardens, dominated in the latter group of species. It appeared that the flora of the studied botanical gardens was rather similar. However, the structure of the flora of different spatial units (six types of microhabitats) distinguished in the particular gardens varied, which was associated with the various management practices. The flora of microhabitats identified in the gardens differed with respect to the number of taxa and spectra of geographical-historical groups of species and life forms. Ruderal sites, arable lands and roadsides supported the highest number of taxa (the flora of the above spatial units was represented by 646, 645 and 597 taxa, respectively). Moreover, they were characterized by a high proportion of annual plants in the flora (43, 38 and 34%, respectively) and by a relatively small representation of apophytes (39% in all the three types of microhabitats). The flora of wet areas and parks was, however, poor in species (154 and 403 species, respectively), but relatively rich in apophytes (72 and 55% of the flora, respectively) and with a low contribution of therophytes (19 and 20%, respectively). The present data were compared with the findings of other authors who investigated the synanthropic flora of cities in which the botanical gardens were located. The comparative analysis of the flora of Poznań and Łódź showed a great richness of species (in relation to size of the area studied) and a high incidence of aliens (especially those, which had not become established permanently) in the botanical gardens. However comparative studies of the flora of Warsaw and that of the two botanical gardens established in the city revealed that the proportion of alien species was lower in case of these gardens. In Warsaw the flora of areas, which had been managed in the same way as those of the botanical gardens, was also investigated. It was found that the botanical gardens in Warsaw were more similar to cemeteries with respect to the structure of flora than they were to the allotments. The present study showed that the high variability of flora within the particular gardens is attributed to the different ways the area is utilized.
In arid and semi-arid ecosystems, shrubs have an important effect on neighboring plants. However, little is known about the interaction of herb growth stages and shrub location on herb performance. We selected Reaumuria soongorica, (Pall.) Maxim a shrub dominant in the semiarid region of northwest China, to determine whether (1) shrubs facilitate or have negative effects on neighbouring herbaceous vegetation, and (2) such effects vary with herb growth stage and with shrub orientation relative to herbs. The presence of herbaceous plant species, plant density, plant height, and percent cover were determined along 2 m long transects spreading in four directions from the base of shrub – east (transect E), west (transect W), south (transect S), and north (transect N); this was repeated for three growth stages (in May, June and July). Results indicated that the effects of R. soongorica on neighboring herbs in different growth stages were similar. Species number of herb-layer plants tended to increase from beneath the canopy to the opening, but plant density, cover and plant height decreased with distance away from shrub base. The presence of R. soongorica had positive effects on density, cover, and plant height, and negative on the number of herbaceous species during the entire growing season. Herbaceous plants growing on transect N under the shrub canopy had significantly higher density and percent cover than those growing in other directions. Biomass of herbs on transect N grown under the shrub canopy was higher than that of herbs on other transects. We concluded that shrub effects on neighbouring herbaceous vegetation were closely related to the shrub orientation relative to the herbs. Therefore, using shrubs as nurse plants for grass-growing must consider the relative placement of shrubs.
The most numerous limestone caves are in the smallest national park in Poland (the Ojców National Park). A total of 50 algal samples were collected from ten caves, each having different environmental factors such as light intensity, temperature and humidity. The morphological and ecological variability of cyanobacteria and algae were studied using fresh samples, cultures grown on agar plates, and documented with TEM, SEM and LM. Light microscopic observations showed that aerophytic cyanobacteria were the most important component of the cave′s photosynthetic microflora. Among cyanobacteria, the following genera were frequently encountered: Aphanocapsa, Chroococcus, Gloeocapsa, Leptolyngbya, and Synechocystis. Whereas the green algal genera, Apatococcus and Klebsormidium, often occurred with Chlorella, Muriella, Neocystis and the diatoms, Orthoseira and Pinnularia. Most of the algal species appeared to be cosmopolitan, ubiquitous, had simple nutrition requirements and wide ecological tolerance (they reproduced rapidly and were easily adaptable to new conditions). The cave′s microhabitats offered relatively stable microclimatic conditions and they seemed to be responsible for the observed distribution of aerophytic algae and cyanobacteria. The Shannon-Wiener index (H′) ranged between 4.9 and 3.9, and the Kruskal-Wallis test showed that these differences were statistically significant.
Moving and standing in trees impose multiple problems to arboreal mammals. Among them, the major ones are the negotiation of slender terminal branches and of large vertical supports. Both microhabitats are important as they have been linked alternatively to the evolutionary loss of claws in early primates. Therefore, rates of use of these different supports by claw-bearing arboreal mammals may offer insights to their actual significance in the adaptive evolution of early primates. In this context, canopy, tree crown, branch size, inclination, and texture use were recorded on four adult free ranging European red squirrelsSciurus vulgaris Linnaeus, 1758 in a mixed coniferous forest in northern Greece.S. vulgaris was mainly arboreal, exploiting the terminal branch zone, using frequently oblique and intermediately textured supports<5 cm and moderately large vertical branches. Furthermore, comparative data from other sciurid species and clawed primates showed positive correlations of small and horizontal support use, and negative ones of vertical support use to body mass. These findings show that keeled functional claws do not impede habitual use of slender branches and may not facilitate efficient climbing on large vertical trunks. These observations partly question the association between habitual use of the small branch niche and primate adaptations and lend support to alternative hypotheses, underscoring the importance of inquiring for more complex mechanisms that lead to the evolution of the unique set of primate morphological adaptations.
The study investigated the effect of microhabitat (emergent/submerged macrophytes) within lakes of different status (transparent/cloudy water) on the diversity and distribution of chironomid assemblages. Field and laboratory studies were undertaken bimonthly, from January to November 2008, in two shallow lakes of Polesie Lubelskie (eastern Poland), transparent water and cloudy water lake. The main objectives of the study were to compare the density and taxonomic richness of chironomids associated with emergent and submerged macrophytes within lakes of extremely different environmental conditions and to recognize the most important variables affected chironomid distribution between microhabitats within lakes. In transparent water lake, number of chironomid taxa varied between 12 (emergent macrophytes) and 18 taxa (submerged macrophytes) and was significantly higher than in cloudy water lake, 6 and 8 taxa, respectively. Mean abundance of chironomids associated with emergent macrophytes was higher in cloudy water lake. The opposite relation was observed on submerged macrophytes. The PCA analysis showed visible distinction of chironomid assemblages between microhabitats and lake types. The results of RDA led to determine the significant variables (Monte-Carlo permutation test) affected chironomid distribution. In both, transparent and cloudy water lake, the significant variables responsible for chironomids distinction between microhabitats were density and biomass of macrophytes, biomass of periphytic algae and pH. Moreover, nutrients, N-NO3 (transparent water lake) and P-PO4 (cloudy water lake), showed the significant influence.
