Durability of engineering structures depends on the structure itself and environmental conditions. Aggressive substances can penetrate concrete matrix causing chemical degradation of material skeleton. At the same time the material is exposed to mechanical exertion which contributes to additional deterioration. This work attempts to analyze chemo-mechanical degradation of concrete from phenomenological point of view using numerical simulation. Diffusion of corrosive species was determined through local diffusion parameters and balance equations with sources and outfl ows prescribed by stoichiometry of chemical equations and reaction extent constant. Degradation of concrete was described with use of an additive scalar damage parameter adopting adequate evolution equations. The cellular automata method used is shown to be an effective calculation method. Contour lines of species concentration and partial damage parameter values were obtained using numerical simulation of the processes in 2D space. As expected, progressive degradation of concrete decreased bearing capacity of the RC section. Numerical simulation of residual cross-section strength was obtained by use of short-time destructive loading tests.
Results of compression tests of various strain rates with measurements of the total counts sum of the acoustic emission for the samples of six selected potato varieties with various appropriations have been presented. It was shown that an increase in the strain rate cause a decrease in failure strain and an exponential increase in the total counts sum. No influence of the strain rate on the failure stress was observed. It was found that the total counts sums were higher in the case of edible medium-late varieties as compared to the medium-early starch varieties within the range of the strain rates studied. No such relation was found for the failure stress and failure strain.
The aim of this study was to analyse the frequency and extent of mechanical damage of tree stems in mountain spruce stands of varying forest cover index and ground slope, without taking into account the technology used in obtaining wood. The study was conducted in 17 spruce stands located in the Sudetes and the Carpathians. In the stands the 1 ha test surfaces were established. The damage on trees with dbh ≥ 18 cm was measured. As a result of the analysis it was found that the most damaged trees grew in the stand with forest cover ratio of 0.7 and 1.0, while taking into account the decline of the area most damage was found in the stands with a slope of 16 to 25°. The study, however, showed no clear relationship between the position of necrosis on tree stems (its size and height) and forest cover and a decrease of the area.
The study presents the measuring position for determination of the dynamical behavior of vegetables and fruit. The main element of the device is an instrumented rigid physical pendulum made of carbon fi ber. The pendulum arm was developed as a double arch connected with the external links. This construction enables attaining the desirable value of the quotient of the mass moment of inertia of the pendulum arm with a fruit and the arm without it as well as appropriate rigidity. The studies with the pendulum device application simulated the apple drop from a required height. The tests measuring pendulum rotation angle and fruit response force in time facilitated determination of the force – displacement correlation at impact event. The obtained displacement and impact force courses in time were presented graphically.
