Colics in horses are a common problem, which can be life-threatening for the animal, depending on the type and severity of the disease. The case described in this article concerns surgically treated intramural hematoma of the jejunum in a 3-year-old Arabian mare. Medial laparotomy was performed in dorsal recumbency under general anesthesia. During the exploration of the abdominal cavity, highly filled intestinal loops were found along with intramural hematoma located in the jejunum. A resection of the intestinal part with extravasation was performed, and the content of the small intestine was evacuated. The postoperative treatment consisted of intravenous and general antibiotic therapy as well as intensive fluid therapy for the next 5 days. The abdominal cavity was flushed two times a day with a warm physiological solution containing heparin. After 3 days the drain was removed. After the treatment the mare returned to full health.
Mice received 5 ng of ricin 24 hours after infection (experiment I) or 1 ng of ricin twice, 24 hours and 17 days of infection (experiment II). Animals were killed in 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and 60 days after infection. In the jejunum and masseter muscle sections, CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ lymphocytes, mast cells and eosinophils were studied. Heavy suppression of CD8⁺ lymphocytes, strong eosinophils and less pronounced mast cells stimulation was observed in the jejunum of mice received ricin (experiment I). Worm expulsion in intestine was faster than in the control (opposite results in experiment II). The composition of cells infiltration in the muscle was in both experiments similar to the control, however, fewer Cn4⁺ lymphocytes were observed in larva capsule and there were fewer muscle larvae. Therefore CD8⁺ cells are believed to take part in restricting only the muscle stage of trichinellosis.
In 50 domestic fowls: ducks, geese, turkeys and chickens, the content of vitamin C in the wall of glandular stomach, jejunum and caecum was determined. Vit. C was determined in tissues and blood plasma by the Roe-Kuether method, the level of an intermediate product of synthesis of D-glucuronic acid by the Bitter method, and the activity of L-gulono-y-oxidase active in the terminal stage of vitamin C synthesis by the Chatterjee method. The level of ascorbic acid synthesis was higher in the walls of the digestive tube in geese and ducks (321.1-294.2 mg/kg of tissue) than in turkeys and chickens (277.7-189.7 mg/kg of tissue). The authors conclude that there exists a close relationship between the synthesis of ascorbic acid, D-glucuronic acid and L-gulono-y-oxidase in domestic fowls. An increase of enzymatic activity of L-gulono-y-oxidase increases vitamin C biosynthesis. The synthesis of vitamin C in tissues of domestic fowls depends on the species and rearing conditions.
In the course of experimental hymenolepidosis in rats, varying mobilization of mastocytes, dependent on the organ of their origin, was observed. The highest was in the small intestine, lower in the mesenterial lymph nodes and the spleen. Various degree of correlation between the mastocyte mobilization and the histopathological changes was stated.
