From a physiological point of view, pain in sport has an informative function, indicating the maximum load capacity of the body and especially of those areas which are usually exposed to maximum loads and, consequently, damage or injury. Pain in an athlete’s body usually has a specific cause, predictable duration, and proven methods of treatment. Pain is part of the sporting experience, irrespective of whether the discipline is a contact or a non-contact sport. Interest in the problems of pain in sport has been growing in recent years, as demonstrated by the host of scientific publications referred to in the paper, and in general the number of articles and studies available in thematic databases. The problem of pain in sport will become increasingly important, not least because of the increasingly higher load on athletes in all disciplines, as shown by the successive new world records. Also, the increasing number of amateur and recreational athletes will require appropriate studies. As this group is not sufficiently prepared for the effort, it is very susceptible to injury. Pain in sport can also be expected to continue to gain in importance considering the increasing number of active elderly people, especially in European countries. The article emphasizes that better knowledge of this area may have practical applications in the training process of athletes as well as persons who are physically active during their working life and after retirement. Furthermore, pain in sport may, due to advances in biological and medical sciences, give rise to new research areas. In this paper, the main trends of scientific problems and research concerning biological aspects of pain in sport are presented.
This study was undertaken to provide baseline information on the injuries and health and safety conditions in Gambian agriculture. The objective was to produce information to guide the formulation of an agricultural health and safety policy for the country, future investigations, prevention and surveillance of the adverse health effects in agriculture. A cross-sectional survey of 20 farmers, 20 nurses, and 20 agricultural extension workers was conducted in the Central and Upper River Divisions of The Gambia. The survey was implemented by the means of questionnaires, walk-through survey and hazard checklist. Seventy percent of farms reported an injury during the past year. Major sources and contributing factors for the injuries were characterized. Predisposing factors to the injuries were climatic conditions, working in static positions, bending and twisting and carrying heavy objects. Cuts and lacerations were identified as the commonest injury types and the most common sources were hand tools (hand hoe, cutlass, axe and knife) and animal-powered carts. A workshop for the major stake holders in the country’s agriculture was also held to identify problems and possible solutions for health promotion of Gambian farmers.
The role of ABA in chilling tolerance (CT) of maize seedling has been reinvestigated using a set of new maize inbred lines with defined differences in CT. Under chilling conditions (4°C) the ABA level increased in all lines investigated. This increase was significantly higher in the chilling tolerant lines than in sensitive ones. Between ABA level and extent of chilling injury a significant relationship was observed. ABA level correlated negatively with percent necrotic injury (-0.604**) and positively with qP (0.606**). Thus, the study clearly indicates a relationship between the ABA accumulation under chilling stress and extent of injury in maize according to the hypothesis that CT in maize is related to the ability for the accumulation of ABA under chilling stress conditions.
Children injuries are one of the biggest problems in modern medicine that require vigorous and preventive actions. All kinds of injuries resulting from road accidents are the most common cause of death in children, more common than cancer and birth defects. In the years 1995-2009, there were 113 211 accidents involving 959 children aged 0-14 years in Poland in which 3791 children died and 117 730 were injured. Most fatalities were recorded in children in the age range 7-14 years. The following study presents the main problems of road safety and the nature, causes and consequences of injures in children in Poland and worldwide. It discusses the risks associated with children involved in traffic as well as ways of reducing the number of accidents in children based on the WHO report.
Inflammation is a non-specific immune response to infection, irritation or other injury, the key features being redness, warmth, swelling and pain. A number of mediators are released which alter the resistance of mucosa to injury induced by noxious substances. Oxidative stress is a unifying mechanism of injury in many types of disease processes, including gastrointestinal diseases. It has been defined as an imbalance in the activity of pro and antioxidants. Pro-oxidants favour free radical formation while antioxidants inhibit or retard the same. A number of markers of oxidative stress have been identified. This review provides an overview of various mediators of inflammation and oxidative stress, and diverse approaches for prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal inflammation.
