X-ray techniques were used to study the presence of hunters' shot, and the residues thereof, in the stomachs of respectively 106, 57 and 4 individuals of the three goose species Anser fabalis, A. albifrons and A. anser. The geese were taken from near Poland's Słońsk Nature Reserve. Whole pieces of shot, considered to have been ingested, were noted in 1.2% of individuals, while residues of shot ingested or fired into birds at some time in the past were obtained from 12.6% of the birds. The latter situation arose more often in White-Fronted Geese than among Bean Geese. 13.8% of the goose stomachs studied were found to have gunshot wounds suffered during recent hunts and linked with the impaling of shot and/or the emergence of fragments of it visible under X-ray.
