Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a rare condition characterized by dilatation of hepatic sinusoids and the presence of blood-filled spaces within the liver. The disease occurs mainly in subjects exposed to toxic substances or estrogens, and is often asymptomatic. A 9 year-old pekingese female dog was sent to Division of Pathology for autopsy because of sudden death of unclear cause. Autopsy revealed severe hydroperitoneum (1500 ml of transsudate), dilatation of heart ventricles, passive hyperemia of lungs, spleen and kidneys. The liver was enlarged, with slightly wrinkled surface, with many red spots, of different size and shape. Microscopic examination of the liver revealed the presence of areas with severe dilatation of hepatic sinusoids, and multiple cystic spaces filled with blood. Some of these spaces were lined with endothelium and other were not. Spaces were different in shape and size and were localized in the areas between dilated sinusoids. Based on the macroscopic and microscopic examination, the liver lesions were identified as severe hepatic sinusoidal dilatation with formation of peliosis hepatis-tike structures.
A 25-year-old female patient with a history of oral contraceptive use was admitted to hospital because of exertional dyspnoea, palpitations, chest discomfort and weakness. Since the clinical presentation was suggestive of some heart disease the patient underwent echocardiography which revealed indirect signs of acute pulmonary embolism. The diagnosis was confirmed with multisliced computed tomography of the pulmonary arteries. Blood test results raised suspicion of antithrombin III deficiency. Enoxaparin and warfarin were used as treatment regimen with good effect and the patient was discharged home without significant symptoms, signs, and with normal echocardiography.
The aim of the study was to trace the ERα immunoreactivity in the hippocampal astrocytes of ovariectomized rabbits with and without the application of 17β-estradiol. The study comprised sexually mature female rabbits that had undergone ovariectomy. The animals were divided into two experimental groups. Group I comprised of the ovariectomized rabbits and group II . the ovariectomized animals treated with 17β -estradiol. The immunocytochemical reaction was conducted with the application of two antibodies against estrogen receptors a. In the ovariectomized rabbits which did not receive 17β -estradiol the astrocytes were characterized by ERα immunoreactivity. Similarly in group II expression of ERα was found in the hippocampus astrocytes following the application of 17β -estradiol. In astrocytes, these receptors are located in the cell body and initial processes and rarely in cell nuclei. The results suggest that astrocytes are the target cells for estrogens, changing their function and modulating hippocampal neuron activity.
The authors describe an individual of the female Ascaris suum Goeze with a unique genital system. A female with such an anomaly was found during laboratory classes of Invertebrate Zoology at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, NCU. The specimen was about 200 mm long, and the total length of the reproductive system was 1970 mm. Further comparative analysis between unchanged and changed individuals revealed differences in the length of individual sections of the studied system, as well as in the diameter of the uterus. The described case is extremely interesting because of the phenomenon of eutely occurring in nematodes. The exact cause and mechanism of abnormalities described in Ascaris suum are not known and difficult to explain experimentally because of the extremely small number of these anomalies. Moreover, the interpretation of the anomaly is difficult because of the specific behavior and complex morphogenesis of this endoparasite.
Sebaceous glands have been extremely rare findings in the female genital system. Excluding the vulva and recent findings, very few cases have been described. The origin of the lesions remains a topic of speculation. However, it appears that prolonged irritation induces a metaplastic response in the ectocervical epithelium. A new case of sebaceous glands in the ectocervix of a 46-year-old woman is reported. The lesions were unexpectedly found in a hysterectomy specimen. The procedure was carried out for multiple leiomyomas of the uterine corpus. Histological examination revealed three mature sebaceous glands located distally to the transformation zone, which opened directly onto the surface epithelium. It could be concluded that sebaceous glands in the ectocervix are rare lesions of unclear origin and low clinical significance. However, the glands could potentially be associated with sebaceous carcinoma of that anatomical site. (Folia Morphol 2009; 68, 4: 287–289)
A 57-year-old female patient with a family history of coronary artery disease admitted to our hospital for the coronary check-up. A coronary angiography was performed with ECG-gated 128 slice dual source computed tomography. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) showed, in addition to the normal coronary arteries, a persistent levoatrial cardinal vein (LCV) draining into vena cava superior. ECG-gated cardiac MDCT is a useful tool showing the origin, course, and drainage site of LCV. (Folia Morphol 2013; 72, 3: 274–277)
