The study presents the results of research on the professional activity of rural inhabitants of provinces in Poland. Moreover, the spatial diversity of professional activity in the years 2003 and 2009 is compared. Research is based on the materials, “Rural areas in Poland” sourced from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). For the sake of this study, provinces are classified according to employment indicator and unemployment rate. The Pearson correlation coefficient for the unemployment rate and the rate of entrepreneurship is determined. The unemployment rate is compared with the rate of entrepreneurship in the years 2003 and 2009. The lowest rate of employment in rural areas is found to be in the provinces along the eastern border, in particular in the West Pomerania Province. These provinces are characterized by a high unemployment rate. Simultaneously, the rural areas of these regions share a high rate of entrepreneurship.
The article shows the scale and reasons of regional disparities in the development of selected activities in multifunctional farmers in Poland, which are a an example of the diversification of farm activities. Moreover, they presented the benefits for farmers as a result of taking up and pursuit of selected multifunctional activities. Empirically, the paper is based on primary and secondary data. The primary data is derived from the findings of a survey carried out among farmers (interview with a questionnaire), whereas the secondary data comes from the Central Statistical Office of Poland. The findings of the research show high regional diversification of the development level of farmers’ nonfarming activity. The highest discrepancy was observed in the case of the percentage of organic farms in the total number of farms. Less intense were those in the case of the share of agritourism farm households, whereas the lowest regional differences were recorded for the farm households holding its own direct sales scheme of farm produce. Another important finding from the survey of the farmers running nonfarming economic activity is that the highest advantages of such activity are the increase in farm household income and improvement of the farm family living standard. However, farmers found it difficult to observe any advantages of nonfarming economic activity in rural areas.
Subject and purpose of work: The purpose of the study was to compare the behavior of companies located in the areas of nature value and in their proximity with companies located in urbanized areas in the Lublin Region in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Materials and methods: The study was conducted by means of the diagnostic survey method, using direct interviews. Results and conclusions: Companies located in valuable natural or close to natural areas tend to undertake ecological and environmental investments (27.68%), care for the common good (54.46%), and treat employees well (54.46%) as compared with the companies located in urban areas (10.72%, 25.89% and 25.89%, respectively). Sensitivity to nature is primarily the result of the company’s direct contact with nature, the recognition of the importance of protecting it, as well as of good treatment of employees, that is it results mainly from the combination of business and personal relationships with employees. Firms located in urban areas are much more likely to support charitable donations (22.33%), which is a result of higher returns by these companies and more frequent requests for financial assistance. Further research in this regard should concern factors that make the entrepreneurs more willing to implement CSRs in their companies.
