The list of species of the plant parasitic nematodes presented in this paper (133 species belonging to 14 families) is based on the results of faunistic research conducted in the Wielkopolska region by Polish nematologists up until the year 2010, and the results obtained from the project “Elaboration of Innovative Methods for Rapid Identification of Nematodes Causing Damage to the Economy” managed by the Museum and Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. During the two years of the project (2010-2011) we found 21 species of nematodes which had not yet been reported in the list of species from the Wielkopolska region. Two of them were reported for the first time in Poland.
Results of two-year studies on the aphids number in different uncultivated habitats (field boundaries, roadsides, field shrubs and forest margins) are presented. The analysis of data permitted to distinguish two basic types of change in the aphids number in a vegetation season.
The paper describes the first attempts at the sprinkler irrigation of plants in Poland which took place in the Kujawy and Wielkopolska Region more than a hundred years ago – at the early 20th century. The first original sprinkler irrigation machine was designed and the used by Mr Władysław Szczepkowski. The sprinkler irrigation machine he constructed in 1911, after earlier a few year trials (at Łęg, the Śrem county, the Poznań Province) was the first sprinkler irrigation machine built at such a large scale in Europe. The system developed by Szczepkowski found many followers in Germany, France, England and the USA. Szczepkowski’s sprinkler irrigation machine became a prototype for many later designs, e.g. the irrigation machines applied today rolled sprinkling pipelines.
The aim of the study was to inventory potential habitats and localities of Eastern eggar Eriogaster catax (Linnaeus, 1758) on the route of expressway S5 Poznań-Wrocław at the Kaczkowo-Korzeńsko section. Insects from documented localities overlapping with the planned expressway were translocated to new locations, guaranteeing development and existence of this protected insect species.
River valleys, apart from their natural values, have unique visual features. The perception of landscape is mainly determined by its spatial structure. Contemporary scientific research confirms significant compliance in the terms of ecological and aesthetic evaluations. The paper presents the results of the research carried out by the authors in the Valley of Samica Kierska River in Wielkopolska which is an area protected as a part of Natura 2000 network. There were three main objectives of the research: 1) an analysis of the relations between spatial structure and visual perception of landscape in the Valley of Samica Kierska River, 2) a comparison of the expert evaluation of the visual values with public aesthetic preferences towards landscape, 3) an assessment of the potential effectiveness of the existing conservation methods in Natura 2000 network for the preservation of landscape visual features.
An inherent element of human existence is the generation of various types of waste linked to our everyday activities. Among the currently generated waste, post consumer recovered wood constitutes an ever bigger share that is waste which is the result of the end of life cycle of various wooden products. The aim of the study was to determine the size and type of post consumer wood discarded on the landfills, such as furniture, window frames, doors, logs and boards, pallets and so on, as well as paper and cardboard. Also the means of utilizing that post consumer wood have been analyzed. The study embraced municipal waste landfills in selected administrative districts of Wielkopolskie Voivodeship.
The aim of this study was to identify the currently functioning institutional support mechanisms for the development of the bio-economy in the Wielkopolska Region. In the initial stage of the study, conducted in late 2013 and 2014, secondary materials were used which had been published by the Central Statistical Office, reports by Association for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centres, Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the information contained on the websites of the institutions. The study included selected administrative-political and economic institutions of Wielkopolska. It was determined whether and to what extent these mechanisms operate in support of activities aimed at bio-economy development. It was found that the biggest, targeted support in this area is offered by Nickel Technology Park, Poznan Science and Technology Park, Centre of Excellence “Food Biotechnology” and the Foundation for Academic Entrepreneurship. In the future, extensive support for bio-economy can be expected from Wielkopolska Centre for Advanced Technology which is in the start-up phase. In other institutions, such support is provided equally to other areas of business and scientific research or it is of no particular interest to the institution. The study does not exhaust the catalogue of the bio-economy support institutions in the region of Wielkopolska. At their present stage a slight targeting of support mechanisms was noted for the activities in the field of bio-economy. Continuation and specification of research is planned.
Twenty species of plant parasitic nematodes were recorded from intensive sugar beet cropping areas in the Wielkopolska region during the years 1997 and 1998.
