This article presents evaluation of effi ciency of the production scale of Polish milk processing companies in 1999–2010 performed basing on non-parametric methods. The non-parametric approach stemmed from linear programming method known as the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. The study involving a sample of 743 objects revealed increasing returns to scale observable in the Polish dairy sector. Further concentration of the dairy sector in Poland should lead to the better results of dairies. This analysis confi rmed earlier conclusions of relevant literature.

In theory, market orientation and agricultural reforms in Ukraine should have led to increase in agricultural efficiency and productivity, and, as a result, to increase in production volumes. However, volumes of agricultural production decreased gradually. Therefore, the market mechanism did not produce the expected results, and that's why there is a question whether the transfer to private property was the result of the market mechanism, which facilitated the exit of inefficient enterprises from the market and development of more efficient agents, or this transition was simply the result of several decrees regarding the need to transfer from state to private property. In order to analyze real changes in the efficiency of Ukrainian agricultural enterprises, it is important to determine the adequacy of existing methods for the assessment of efficiency. In this paper we propose nonparametric approaches to the assessment of efficiency, and we also analyzed the efficiency of agricultural enterprises, located in a certain Ukrainian region; we determined, which factors have a dominating influence on agricultural efficiency and which resources are used in a least efficient way and why.

The study at hand examines the assumption about the influence on the welfare situation of a particular commune that is carried out by the dynamics of NGO's activity of its territory. A statistical data set from about 1000 communes in Poland has been employed. Research method involves a Data Envelopment Analysis estimation of efficiency frontier. The results of efficiency measurement in the communes indicate that the number organisations has a significant effect on the competiveness of basic administrative units. Furthermore ocation constitutes also a factor influencing the efficiency of communes - communes located around agglomerations are more efficient than other units of local administration.

Data Envelopment Analysis is one of the quantitative methods in economics used more broadly during last years. This is nonparametric method which allows to make an estimation of the efficiency of the organization without having financial data. Authors decided to use this method for validation of the efficiency of the Polish wholesale markets. The National Development Program of the Wholesale Markets expected that all markets will have the same possibility to be efficient. It seems that the development of wholesale markets is varying. To check this hipotheses authors have chosen as an input: area, building area while as an output have been chosen: sales volume per year in tones, the number of traders and the number of producers.
