Farms in Poland are dominated by small ones with several hectares of farmland. Their specific nature means that the majority of them are subsistence farms, producing mainly or exclusively for the consumption needs of their owners. These farms are significantly independent of agricultural markets which gives them a relative resistance to the volatility of farm produce prices. The great attachment of their owners to their land property restricts the supply of land and hinders changes in the agrarian structure, particularly in southern Poland. The results of the study confirm the assessment of a favourable impact of European integration among a major proportion of farmers, who assess the impact of integration on their commune, nation and agriculture higher than its impact on the farmer’s family and farm. Every fifth respondent is convinced that Poland’s accession to the European Union will hasten the downfall of his farm, while forty percent state that the changes in their farms are not a consequence of this process. Almost one in ten analyzed farms sees opportunities for their development stemming from the implementation of Common Agricultural Policy instruments, this being true mainly for the relatively large farms with a high level of commercial production and a high proportion of farming income in the farmer’s family total income. Farms with up to several hectares of land are mainly oriented towards self-supply, they are usually subsistence farms providing the necessary minimum for the family’s survival. As a result of the European integration and implementation of the farm policy instruments subsistence farms are, on the one hand, even more isolated from the market due to the low profitability of production, and on the other, direct payments petrify subsistence farming even further, thus hindering the redistribution of land and any change in the agrarian structure.
