Deindustrialisation in the European Union has resulted in relocation of production to cheaper Asian countries by many companies, extension of the supply chains and a wide dissemination of their particular links. However, some factors that have appeared recently may radically change the situation. These include: - the activities of organizations for the protection of human rights and nature, which substantially hinder large brands from continuing the trend of minimising their costs; - the growing need of reducing the product supply time in order to satisfy unpredictable demand; - the adoption by the European Commission (EC) a strategy of reindustrialisation of the European Union (EU) as a solution to the financial crisis. Taking the above into consideration, a research problem has emerged, leading to the following questions: does reindustrialisation affect supply chains and how, and is it possible to predict these changes? The aim of this paper is to explain and assess the intensity of the European Union reindustrialisation process and to develop knowledge about its potential impact on supply chains.
