PRNP gene polymorphisms in Polish population of East-Friesian milk sheep. The research was carried out on the flock of East-Friesian Milk sheep in Poland to genotype the prion protein gene (PRNP) polymorphisms. Blood samples were collected from 108 ewes and 7 rams and the DNA was isolated by the method of chromatography on silica minicolumns (A&A Biotechnology). The investigation of polymorphisms in the PRNP gene was done due to the KASPar® technology. Frequencies of alleles ARR, ARQ and AHQ were 0.335, 0.391 and 0.274, respectively. Six genotypes of PRNP gene were observed. The ARR/ARR genotype was the most valuable at statistically significant level and the frequency of ARR allele was higher in rams in contrary to ewes what may be important in case of its possibly high frequency in offspring. It may be confirmed by the low frequencies of ARQ and AHQ alleles (p£0.05) observed in rams in contrary to the ewes. No differences in the frequencies of other genotypes (except ARR/ARR) due to the sex of animals were observed. The breeding work should be continued to increase the frequency of ARR allele. The selection of best rams with the ARR/ARR as the flock rams as well as the elimination of ARQ allele in flock ewes are preferred.
Level of milk performance of sheep and goat suckled by their offspring bred under the conditions of alternative production systems. The research was carried out in 2007 on the Boer goat does and ewes of two sheep breeds of Polish Heath Sheep and Zelaznienska. The animals were at age of 2-3 years and they were suckled by the offspring born as singles or twins. During 12-weeks of lactation, the milk controlling was provided in every 2-weeks. The milk from 3 hours secretion was obtained. The individual milk samples were analyzed due to the milk yield, chemical composition and somatic cell account. Moreover, at the same time of milking, the data concerning the body growth development of kids and lambs were collected. The results showed significant distinctness of Boer goats, Polish Heath Sheep and Zelaznienska sheep due to the all examined milking traits. The highest body weights till 84 day of life were observed in growing lambs of Zelaznienska sheep in contrary to Polish Heath Sheep lambs and Boer kids. The maternal abilities of does and ewes in case of the offspring rearing expressed the best results of daily gains at the late stage of lactation in Boer goats, then in Polish Heath Sheep and Zelaznienska sheep.
