The effects of cow breed and genotype as well as udder health on yield, chemical composition and immunological value of the colostrum in the first day of lactation were analyzed. The investigations were carried out on 32 Black-and-White and Red-and-White cows kept on a dairy cattle farm in southwestern Poland. A significant effect of animals’ breed on fat content and somatic cell count in the colostrums’ was found. The colostrums’ yield in the first two milkings, somatic cell count, immunoglobulins and α-laktoalbumins content differed significantly between cows from different genetic groups that may have an influence on the development and health of calves. The high somatic cell count (>1.0 mln SCC/ml) caused a significant decrease of colostrum’s yield, density and nutrient content that reduced the colostrum’s immunological and nutritive value.
