The Romanian myrmecofauna is insufficiently known, mostly cryptic, sub-Mediterranean and parasitic species are lacking from the checklist. In this article a new species for the Romanian fauna is presented: Pyramica baudueri Em., a cryptic and sub-Mediterranean species. Two specimens were found in South-Westem Romania, close to the Hungarian border. P. baudueri lives in the soil, and hunts for small arthropods. Besides Pyramica, specimens of Ponera testacea Em. were also found on the same spot; this is the fifth data on the occurrence of this species in Romania. As several dacetine species are known from Southern and Central European countries it can be hypothesized that specific collecting methods would probably increase the number of dacetine species known from Romania. Upon this article the number of known Romanian ant species sums up to 105.
The wood ant Formica polyctena Först, is a territorial species, a regular top dominant of ant communities in forests. Its colonies defend their whole foraging areas (territories) against other territorial ants, including F. sanguinea Latr., a common facultative slave-maker. The most frequent ‘victim’ ol F. sanguinea is F. fusca L., a ubiquitous submissive ant species. On the basis of some earlier observations, the presumption was made that F. polyctena, when defending its own territories, would indirectly protect F. fusca colonies, which nest within these territories, from F. sanguinea raids. It was expected that F. fusca should be more abundant in F. polyctena territories, than in F. sanguinea territories, while other subordinate ants, which are not potential slaves of F. sanguinea, should not show such difference. This hypothesis was supported by the results of the baiting experiments carried out in the Białowieża Forest, NE Poland. The findings are discussed in the context of interspecific competition hierarchy in ants.
Formica cinerea Mayr is supposed to be the top dominant of ant communities in successional sandy habitats, whereas wood ant species, e.g. F. rufa L., play this role in forests. These species often co-occur in overlapping habitats. The aim of the study was to recognize competitive interrelations between them in the broad ecological aspect of relations with local subordinate species, including F. fusca L., Tetramorium caespitum (L.) and Myrmica schencki Viereck. Study area was a sand dune slope surrounded by pine forest at Tvärminne, S Finland, where F. cinerea nest complexes were encircled by F. rufa colonies. Baiting experiments, preceded by ‘nudum’ observations were carried out. The presumption that F. rufa would influence the activity of F. cinerea was not supported by the results. No-ant zones separated the territories of these two species almost through the total length of the boundary of the F. cinerea range. The outcome of interspecific interactions within the multi-species community studied corresponded with the species competitive status generally. The results are discussed in the context of interspecific competition hierarchy in ants and succession of ant communities.
Lasius psammophilus Seifert and Formica cinerea Mayr can both be found on sand dunes in high densities. Sometimes they even nest in each other's immediate neighbourhood, which implies the possibility of conflicts, and the existence of mechanisms for avoiding contest competition. In such case an appropriate method is the analysis of the distribution and behaviour of foraging individuals around their colonies in the absence and in the presence of baits. The results show that the higher foraging activity of L. psammophilus with lower temperature and higher humidity as compared to F. cinerea, as well as the lack of spatial interference assures a relatively peaceful coexistence even in the case of neighbouring colonies. While L. psammophilus is characterized by fortuitousness regarding the chances of discovering food sources, F. cinerea foragers search more thoroughly around their colonies. Conflicts can arise over large food sources, which conflicts are usually won by F. cinerea. However, the more efficient recruitment system of L. psammophilus (earlier start and higher intensity), allows this species dominate at clumped food patches when the climatic conditions are favourable. The possible ways of coexistence are discussed, as well as the species' positions in the competition hierarchy.
So far, besides some specialised Neotropical ant species of the genus Cephalotes Latr., the Palaearctic Myrmica schencki Viereck, M. rubra (L.) and Tetramorium cf. caespitum (L.) were known to be, at least facultative, pollen-eaters. The present paper reports on nine other common Palaearctic ant species occasionally feeding on pine pollen: Myrmica ruginodis Nyl., F. pratensis Retz., F. cinerea Mayr, F. clara For., F. sanguinea Latr., F. exsecta Nyl., Lasius niger (L.), L. platythorax Seifert, and L. fuliginosus (Latr.) and re-confirms pollenivory of M. schencki. Pollenivory of all these species was revealed based on the presence of pollen grains in the alimentary canal of the dissected workers. The possible role of pollen in the diet of ants as a generally omnivorous insect group is discussed.
Species composition, nest densities and ecological profiles of ant communities in three main typical forest habitats of Chełmowa Góra (Chełmowa Mount) in the Świętokrzyski National Park were studied: fertile Carpathian beech forest Dentario glandulosae-Fagetum, subcontinental linden-oak-hornbeam forest Tilio-Carpinetum (marginal zone and interior), continental mixed pine forest Querco roboris-Pinetum (marginal zone and interior). Additionally, a moist rye-grass meadow Arrhenatheretum elatioris adjacent to the mixed pine forest was also surveyed. Nest samples were collected by searching quadrats of different sizes (1 m2, 10 m2, 100 m2). In total, 16 species were found. Ant communities of the studied habitats differed from each other in their composition, abundance and structure. In respect of nest density, Myrmica ruginodis Nyl. dominated in Tilio-Carpinetum (in both forest zones) and in the interior of Querco roboris-Pinetum, Formica polyctena Först. in the marginal zone of Querco roboris-Pinetum and in Dentario glandulosae-Fagetum, and Lasius niger (L.) in the meadow. The results are discussed in the contexts of the former data from this region, and the possible community-forming impact of the local 'supercolony' of F. polyctena
Some literature reports show that ants use bodies of their dead nestmates and other insect remains in conflict situations. The paper describes such phenomenon in a Formica rufa L. colony brought into conflict with a F. cinerea Mayr colony when the former tried to extend its own territory at the expense of the latter. A territorially stable F. rufa colony, neighbouring the same F. cinerea colony, served as control. Workers of the expansive F. rufa colony were repeatedly observed to carry numerous ant corpses, empty pupal cocoons and insect leftovers from their nest to the place of confrontation with F. cinerea, on a much bigger scale than workers of the stable F. rufa colony. Corpse-carrying intensity was not correlated with the general activity level of foragers which suggests that corpse carriers could be a separate task group. Workers of a small colony of F. cinerea were also observed to surround their nest entrance with corpses of their nestmates and prey remains, taken out from inside the nest, in response to intensified traffic of workers of F. rufa in the vicinity of their nest. These results are discussed in the context of a possible interrelation between ant aggressive behaviour and transport behaviour. Two hypotheses are proposed to explain the observed phenomenon: (1) explaining it as a by-product of the aggressive arousal of workers, and (2) ascribing to it a possible signalling function in conflict situations.
During long-term field studies on division of space between the territorial ant species Lasius fuliginosus (Latr.) and Formica polyctena Först, in southern Finland a severe decrease in the abundance of subordinate ant species was observed within L. fuliginosus territory. As part of this study we analyze the extent of changes in subordinate ant species assemblage in the light of already documented cases of L. fuliginosus prédation on colonies of subordinate ants. The results showed that L. fuliginosus had a much stronger negative impact on co-occurring subordinate species, than the neighbouring rival F. polyctena. The hypothesis of hunger-induced myrmecophagy in this species is put forward, and is discussed as a possible competitive mechanism by which L. fuliginosus could shape ant assemblages within its territories.
Myrmica schencki Em. and M. rubra (L.), common Palaearctic ant species, collect fallen male Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) inflorescence during the pine blossom time, take it to their nests and then gather it on rubbish piles close to nest-entrances. Dissection of M. schencki workers revealed the presence of numerous pollen grains in their crops and midguts proving at least periodical pollenivory of these ants. So far, only some Neotropical ants of the genus Cephalotes Latr. have been known to eat pollen.
The mound building narrowheaded ant Formica exsecta builds guarding outstations, usually at the root of the aphid-housing plants. Colonies of this species can develop into huge polydomous systems, so-called supercolonies, made up of several hundred of related nests and outstations. Although the existence of these guarding structures is well-known, still there is little information available concerning their characteristics. In the frame of this study we analyze the characteristics and the integrative role of outstations within a large polydomous system of F. exsecta as a function of ant nest density. The study was carried out in Transylvania, Romania. Two areas with different ant nest densities were selected for the purpose of this study: high (HD) and low density (LD) sites. Parallel to the density of ant nests, the density of outstations was also higher at the HD site, while the size of outstations and the number of ants residing in them did not differ significantly between the two sites. Outstations were usually maintained by a single ant nest at the LD site, thus the common exploitation of food resources was less frequent, whereas at the HD site outstations were used by more ant nests. This article provides the first evidence to shared use of outstations in F. exsecta. In the view of our results outstations, in addition to guarding aphid colonies, also function as permanent meeting points for workers from different nests, which contribute essentially to the integration of nests within a polydomous system.
