The sustainable future of the civilisation means the sustainable development on the global scale and sustainable mobility of the individual. Therefore, the need for the creation of global energy system arises in conviction that the environment and economy may and must interoperate. The global environmental problems may not be solved by applying current technologies. New technologies must be developed. The author discusses factors in favour of global energy system, future portable and stationary power generation units and power generators in transport.
Having discussed the civilizations of the agrarian and industrial age, the author concludes: we live at the onset of IT civilization, however its institutions are merely fledgling. All politicians and citizens who want to move with times should cease to hark back to the industrial age and drive to create the IT civilization. This is particularly relevant to the issues of new energy sources.
As long as humans operate within the boundaries of the biosphere delineated by nature, nothing poses a threat to the natural environment except diseases that devastate the population. When humans started tapping into natural reserves beyond this biosphere, such as fuels, the era of industrial civilisation began. First came fossil fuels, then nuclear energy; and nature did not create mechanisms to protect against the related adverse environmental impact. The author presents the history of the extraction of fossil fuels, forecasts of energy requirements on a worldwide scale, and related considerations concerning greenhouse gas emissions. The author underlines the necessity of replacing traditional power generators with generators that are neutral in terms of greenhouse gases, such as fuel cells.
Muon cold nuclear fusion developed mainly in the US and Japan, in conjunction with biological and fossil carbon neutral to the greenhouse effect, could affect the global methanol and carbon cycle to combine two tendencies sought by the man: the preservation of the climate for future generations and sustainable future of the civilisation. Poland has the chance to solve problems occurring in rural areas, reduce national debt and be self-sufficient in terms of energy by 2030, using high energy neutron sources. It has a patent for economically viable production and utilisation of methanol using high energy neutrons.
The article is the abridged lecture prepared for the conference on „Biomass for the development of rural areas” organised by Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The author discusses the state of the Polish agriculture, the role of bioenergy as a factor contributing to Poland’s development, methanol manufacture processes, application of fuel cells for powering buses and the impact of fuel utilization on the environment.
Decreasing the gap in standard of living and economy between rural and urban areas is a fundamental issue for achieving sustainable development. Solving this problem would require improved economic performance of farms, finding markets for increased agricultural production, ensuring widespread secondary education together with job creation in urban areas. This will need large sums of money and take decades to implement. A program of development of rural areas and methods of its implementation is badly needed now. The article hopes to open the debate for finding possible solutions.
