In this experiment 69 calves were used, from birth to 90 days of age. For the first three days the calves remained with thier dams. After this period they were moved into individual calfsheds where they stayed until ten days of age. After ten days one group of 33 calves was moved outdoors into shelter, and 36 calves remained in the sheds. In both groups, the feeding scheme was the same Bodyweight gains, feed consumption, hygienic conditions (temperature, humidity) and health of animals were observed. The range of blood tests included protein, immunoglobulin, vitamin A levels and morphology. Most diseases and deaths were caused by diarrhoea, usually during the first ten days of life. The health of calves was similar in both groups.
