The content of endogenous melanin in white Balb c and black C-57 Bl. mice affected Zn2+ and Co2+ accumulation, elimination and distribution following intraperitoneal administration of these ions. Elimination of Co2+ ions was significantly greater in white mice than in black mice. Accumulation of Zn2+ was higher than that of Co2+ and did not depend on melanin content in mice. The same response was observed upon administration of exogenous melanin. Both ions accumulated mainly in spleen and heart irrespective of melanin content.
The role of contact with nickel-containing coins has been controversial. The aim of our study was to compare the release of nickel from Euro (1 and 2) coins and from Polish coins (2 PLN and 5 PLN) at 4ºC and 32ºC in an immersion test using artificial sweat according to the EU reference method. Nickel extract was analyzed at 8 time points starting from 1 h up to 168 h. After 7 days of test duration at 32ºC, nickel ion concentration was 96.27±4.01 μg/cm2, 79.31±1.95 μg/cm2, 38.34±1.19 μg/cm2, and 32.17±2.36 μg/cm2 for 2 Euro, 1 Euro, 5 PLN, and 2 PLN, respectively. The amount of nickel ion released at 4ºC was reduced by about 70% and 40% for Euro and Polish coins, respectively. These values exceed the limit acceptable for prolonged contact with human skin as defined by the EU Nickel Directive, which indicates that nickel may be capable of eliciting allergic reactions in subjects handling nickel-containing coins daily.
The mainly purpose of our study was to determine Ba in pharyngeal tonsils of children living in the influence of dust emission from power stations in the following regions in southern Poland: Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska, Upper Silesia, and Krakow. The concept of investigation was based on the fact of high levels of Ba in suspended dust emitted by power stations (about 800 μg/g). Moreover, these children are exposed to secondary emissions of Ba from soil dust (500-1,000 μg/g) during outdoor recreation. Ba concentrations in pharyngeal tonsils may be involved in indicating the pollution of some plants. Ba concentrations in pharyngeal tonsils were determined using the ACP-AES method. The characteristic feature of pharyngeal tonsils is their ability and high specificity of Ba accumulation from inhaled air. The average level of Ba concentration in tonsils was similar in all groups of children (0.03-0.09 μg/g) with the exception of boys from Jura Krakowsko Częstochowska – 0.22 μg/g. The differences of Ba content in pharyngeal tonsils measured as the maximum concentration range depends on sex and place of residence. Moreover, the interaction between Ba with other pollution elements was described.
