Changes of Turkey quality eggshell parameters across laying period

Eggshell quality is crucial in poultry production. Parameters such as eggshell thickness, dimensions, shape and durability impact hatchability and economic losses due egg damages. While most studies are conducted on laying hens, the changes occurring during laying period in turkey is less known. In the presented studies the turkey hatching egg parameters at the beginning, middle and the end of the laying period, of both unfertilized eggs and post hatched eggshells were investigated. Eggs were obtained from flock B.U.T. Big 6 and were collected from three laying periods: beginning (1–3 week), middle (10–12 week) and end (21–23 weeks). From each period were collected 180 eggs without embryos and 130 posthathed eggshells. Eggs were measured (length and width), there was measured eggshell durability and thickness. It was found that towards the end of laying period the eggs change in size (become bigger) and shape (are more elongated). The decrease in eggshellstrength (−14.03% at the end of laying period) was more rapid than observed eggshell thinning (−5.11% at the end). This may be a consequence of both changes in the shape of the egg and thinning of the shell structure which affect its strength. Greater eggshell thinning, a consequence of embryonic development, was observed at the beginning of the laying period (9.56%) than in the middle and end (about 6.60%). The reason for this may have been the smaller available area of calcium resorption in the smaller eggs from the beginning of laying period, or potential changes in the structure of the mammillary layer in eggs from different periods.
