Protection of natural environmet is strictly connected with economy, especially with physical planning. Natural resources can be exploited only within range imposed by nation-level physical planning, implemented by the state administration. The administrative division often does not reflect the boundaries of regions determined by physiographic conditions. This discrepancy stems from various economic activities pursued in naturally homogenous areas. To counteract this trend, a plan covering the north-east provinces: Białystok, Łomża, Suwałki Ostrołęka, Olsztyn and allowing for natural and social-economic conditions, was prepared. Implementaton of „green lungs” project requires preparing a physical planning scheme for this region and coordination of this plan with previous ones.
