The aim of the study was to explain why in a farm in the Bydgoszcz region young cattle were getting low body weight gains and milking cows were in a poor state of health. The studies included blood assessment, i.e. haematocrit - Ht, concentration of haemoglobin - Hb, the level of Cu and ceruloplasmin - Cp in sera obtained from the animals treated by various systems during grazing time and following feeding on silage supplemented with microelements. Iron metabolism was assessed on the basis of the changes of Fe levels, total iron bunding capacity (TIBC), unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC) in sera and the index of transferrin saturation (TfS). The studies indicated that lowered indices of Ht and Hb during grazing time were accompanied by hypocupraemia. Despite low concentrations of Cp in sera of cows with hypocupraemia, the alterations in Fe, UIBC and TfS pointed to a mobilisation of iron transport.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the changeability of clinical and haematological indices as a result of a standard physical effort of horses. The study included 114 clinically healthy horses representing different groups: breeding horses (27), recreation horses (22) and sport horses (65). The group of sport horses consisted of race horses (11), trotters (15), jumping horses (25) and driving horses (14). The heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR) measurements as well as blood collection were performed three times: before exercise, immediately after exercise and after a 30-minute rest. The blood samples were assessed for red blood cell count (RBC), hematocrit (Ht), hemoglobin (Hb), white blood cell count (WBC), lymphocytes (L) and neutrophils (N). The study demonstrated that a standard physical exercise in sport horses results in a significant, temporary changes in the values of clinical and haematological indices. The differences of these reactions in animals representing different sport disciplines suggest the relation with the intensity, type and duration of the effort. The highest post-exercise changeability of these indices was found in sport horses (especially driving horses) which were subject to the greatest exercise load. The average post-exercise increase of the values of HR, RR, RBC, Ht, Hb and L was 212; 637; 36; 41; 31 and 50% respectively. A relatively small physical effort of recreation horses did not result in statistically significant changes of these indices except for an increase in the respiratory rate (by about 115%).
The purpose of the work was to determine the level of haemoglobin, Hct index and the content of mineral components in the serum and erythrocytes in relation to the degree of meat breed’s participation in sheep crossbreeding. The studies were conducted on terms of production on pure Polish Merino sheep and their crossbreds (Polish Merino ewes x Suffolk rams) with 50% and 75% of Suffolk blood participation. The level of Hb, the value of Hct and Na, K, Ca, Cl, inorganic P and Mg contents in serum and erythrocytes were estimated. The mean value of haematological indices in blood and mean contents of macroelements in the serum were within the range qualified as the physiological standards. There was found statistically significant differences concerning the macroelements level in the serum and erythrocytes among different groups of crossbreds according to the degree of Suffolk breed’s participation.
