Well known and acute viral diseases result in serious after-effects, but these are often present as well after mild infections. Research is now being carried out on, amongst others, the putative role of viruses in neuro-psychiatric diseases which have been known to even lead to the development of anti-social behaviour in humans. Some of the data presented in this review concern: virokines as mediators of virus-host interaction; control of early viral distribution by natural antibodies; viral aetiology of fowl glioma; BAC-VAC - a new generation of DNA vaccines; effective drugs used against entero-viruses; the genetic relation of big liver and spleen (BLS) disease virus of hens to human hepatitis E virus; swine hepatitis E virus - a new pathogen; influenza A virus as a cause of sporadic-milk-drop syndrome in dairy cows; the adenovirus vector of p53 gene; molecular prosthesis restoring conformation and function of mutant p53 protein.
This review is characterizing the 4 following Coronaviruses, being etiological agents of correspondent diseases occurring in swine: transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) and transmissible gastroenteritis; porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV), being a mutant of TGEV, and porcine respiratory coronavirus infection; porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and porcine epidemic diarrhea; hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus (HEV) and vomiting and wasting disease. In case of TGE and porcine respiratory coronavirus infection particularly the laboratory diagnostic tests were mentioned, enabling the differential diagnosis of the two mentioned diseases. In case of porcine epidemic diarrhea the clinical symptoms and pathologic lesions were presented. Laboratory diagnosis, indicating particularly RT-PCR as a valuable diagnostic test for the identification of the virus, was mentioned. This was followed by the information concerning prevention and control of the disease. As an important procedure of preventing PED introduction to the farm the effective biosecurity, referring to humans, vehicles and equipment contacting with the swine, was suggested as obligatory. Following this the HEV and the vomiting and wasting disease was shortly described. Two main clinical pictures of the infection, occurring in pigs below 3-4 weeks of age as the consequence of the neurotropism of HEV, were indicated. It also was underlined that the etiological agent is endemic in both breeding and fattening swine.
