The castle dates from the 14th century and it was built as a defensive edifice by Andrzej Toporczyk who after some time took the name of Tenczyński — after the name of the place. For many years the castle was a source of power of the family who played an important part in the politics of old Poland. In the 16th century the invasion of the Swedes destroyed the Tenczyn castle and finished its former splendour. In the course of time the castle was ruined. Then the ruins of the castle were preserved twice, at the beginning of the 20th century and after the Second World War. It should be noted that Mikotaj Rej (the first famous Polish writer) spent his youth at the Tenczyn castle.
