The aim of the study was to determine whether the manner of use, age and sex affect selected biochemical and antioxidant blood parameters of Malopolski horses, and whether there is an interaction between these factors. The study was conducted on 30 riding horses of the Malopolski breed divided by sex (18 mares and 12 colts) and age (2-6 years, 7-9 years and 10-16 years). The horses were also divided according to usage (recreational use and sports use). The research was conducted at the end of March and the beginning of April during two consecutive years. In each year, blood from the same horses was analysed. Blood plasma was analyzed for total protein, glucose, bilirubin, urea, uric acid, creatinine, Zn⁺², Cu⁺² and Fe⁺². In addition the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, plasma total antioxidant status (FRAP) and the concentration of malondialdehyde were determined. Neither the age of the horses nor their use (for recreation or sport) had significant effect on biochemical indices of blood. However, the CAT activity and the levels of MDA, zinc and iron were higher in the blood of horses used for sports than they were in the blood of horses used for recreation. Age affected the value of the biomarkers of redox status. Compared with young horses, older animals showed increased oxidative processes (an increase in MDA) and a reduced antioxidant defense (SOD, FRAP, Cu⁺², Zn⁺²). The sex of the horses had a significant influence on the levels of both biochemical and antioxidant parameters. Colts had significantly higher contents of TP, UA, SOD, CAT, Cu⁺² and Fe⁺² and lower of BIL and MDA compared to mares. The interaction observed in this study between age or sex and usage on the antioxidant parameters confirms that the redox status indicators can be helpful in assessing the welfare of Malopolski horses undergoing differentiated exertion.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the changeability of clinical and haematological indices as a result of a standard physical effort of horses. The study included 114 clinically healthy horses representing different groups: breeding horses (27), recreation horses (22) and sport horses (65). The group of sport horses consisted of race horses (11), trotters (15), jumping horses (25) and driving horses (14). The heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR) measurements as well as blood collection were performed three times: before exercise, immediately after exercise and after a 30-minute rest. The blood samples were assessed for red blood cell count (RBC), hematocrit (Ht), hemoglobin (Hb), white blood cell count (WBC), lymphocytes (L) and neutrophils (N). The study demonstrated that a standard physical exercise in sport horses results in a significant, temporary changes in the values of clinical and haematological indices. The differences of these reactions in animals representing different sport disciplines suggest the relation with the intensity, type and duration of the effort. The highest post-exercise changeability of these indices was found in sport horses (especially driving horses) which were subject to the greatest exercise load. The average post-exercise increase of the values of HR, RR, RBC, Ht, Hb and L was 212; 637; 36; 41; 31 and 50% respectively. A relatively small physical effort of recreation horses did not result in statistically significant changes of these indices except for an increase in the respiratory rate (by about 115%).
The purpose of this study was to present the possibilities of using available Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) created by the users of OpenStreetMap program and sports applications such as GPies.com or Endomondo to monitor the traffic in the forest area. In addition, areas where, due to high traffic, potential conflicts between different user groups may occur, were marked out. The research area covered two mountain forest districts located in the Sudetes Mountains: Szklarska Poręba and Świeradów, which due to their tourist values and an extensive network of hiking and cycling trails arouse society’s interest. In the area, 2896 unique activities divided into cycling, running and hiking were registered. It was shown that 7.3% of the length of routes used by pedestrians, 13.6% of the length of routes for runners and 11.0% of the length of routes for cyclists are characterized by high intensity of traffic, while 30.3%, 28.4% and 37.7% of routes for the indicated groups, respectively, are characterized by medium intensity of traffic. On other routes, low intensity of utilization was observed. Existing hiking and cycling trails were pointed out as the most frequently used routes. The specially designed bicycle routes, the so−called ‘Single track’, located in the Świeradów Forest District, were popular among the users. The highest traffic occurred in the morning and afternoon, on weekends and in the summer months. According to the adopted assumptions, there is a high risk of conflicts between runners and cyclists at about 1.5% of the route length as well as 2.1% of the length of routes used simultaneously by pedestrians and cyclists. It should be stated that VGI data can be used to monitor traffic in forest areas and constitute one of the elements of the decision support system (DSS). A certain weakness of VGI data from the sports applications used in this study could be the lack of the possibility of creating user profiles. Consequently that causes lack of more detailed data on this subject (age, sex, etc.). The limitation in the data useage is the privacy policy, which allows downloading only such data that has been made available for public use in the application resources.
