Phage typing of 427 Salmonella enteritidis (SE) strains of animal origin was performed. The typing method developed by Lalko was employed. SE strains had been isolated from animals, food and animal feed during the years 1979-1986 and 1994-1997. Phage types 3 and 1 were predominant in SE strains isolated in the years 1979-1986, and were noted in 66.2% and 15.6%, respectively. Untypical reactions (RDNC) were observed in 16.9% of those strains. Phage type 1 was found in 58.7% whilst type 3 in 21.4% of the strains isolated in the years 1994-1997. RDNC reactions were noted in 15.4% and type 7 occured in 3.6% of SE strains. Single strains belonged to type 5 and 2. One SE strain was untypable. In conclusion, the applied phage typing system proved to be valuable in epidemiological studies of SE isolates of animal origin.
