Badaniu poddano plon świeżego i suchego ziela bazylii pospolitej, a następnie przeprowadzono ocenę składu chemicznego świeżego surowca przyprawowego, określając w nim zawartość: suchej masy, kwasu L-askorbinowego, cukrów ogółem i redukujących. Analizując wyniki badań wykazano, że uprawiane eko-typy Ocimum basilicum L. istotnie różnicowały wielkość plonu oraz skład ziela. Największym średnim plonem w toku trzyletnich badań charakteryzowała się bazylia cynamonowa, zaś najmniejszy średni plon ziela pozyskano z bazylii czerwonolistnej, której surowiec przyprawowy zawierał najmniej suchej masy, kwasu L-askorbinowego oraz cukrów ogółem. Najwięcej suchej masy oraz kwasu L-askorbino-wego zawierała bazylia zielonolistna, zaś największą zawartością cukrów ogółem charakteryzował się surowiec przyprawowy bazylii cynamonowej. Największą zawartością cukrów redukujących odznaczała się bazylia pospolita cytrynowa, a najmniejszą – bazylia zielonolistna. Analiza terminu siewu nasion w drugim oraz trzecim roku badań wykazała, iż wcześniejszy termin siewu istotnie zwiększał wielkość plonu oraz zawartość cukrów ogółem.
The aim of an experiment conducted in 2006–2008 was to determine the effect of soil fertilization with Crop Care on the yield and chemical composition of carrot cultivars with orange- and purple-colored storage roots. The yield and chemical composition of three carrot cultivars: ‘Florida F1’ with orange-colored roots, ‘Deep Purple F1‘ with purple-colored roots and ‘Purple Haze F1‘ with roots that have a purple cortex and an orange core were compared in this study. Plants were grown in control soil with sufficient quantities of nutrients to support the development of carrot roots as well as in soil additionally fertilized with Crop Care. The results of the study showed that carrots of cv. ‘Florida F1’ produced a much higher total yield and marketable yield than carrots of cv. ‘Deep Purple F1’ and ‘Purple Haze F1’. Additional fertilization significantly increased the marketable yield of the carrots. The edible parts of purple root cultivars were characterized by a higher content of dry matter, L-ascorbic acid and total carbohydrates. The application of the Crop Care fertilizer significantly increased the dry matter content of carrots. Roots of cv. ‘Deep Purple F1’ contained the highest levels of N, K and Mg, while cv. Florida F1 was most abundant in Ca and Na.
Fertilization of plants with silicon is particularly justified in soilless culture in which the roots of plants cannot use silicon resources in the soil. Silicon is the only element that does not harm plants when taken up in excessive amounts and its use in plant fertilization improves the yielding ability of plants and their resistance to various stress factors. The effectiveness of silicon application in growing plants is strictly dependent on both the source of this element, plant species and cultivars. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of root application of colloidal silicon as well as of three types of growing media of different silica content and varying ability to release orthosilicate monomers (rockwool, sand, straw) on yield and chemical composition of greenhouse tomato. The research was conducted in greenhouse in the period 2008–2009. Tomato was grown in an extended growth cycle (22 clusters) using a drip irrigation and fertilization system with closed nutrient solution circulation. Tomato plants fertigated with the nutrient solution enriched with silicon showed significantly higher total fruit yield (15.98 kg·plant-1) compare to plant grown in control treatments. In the studies not found significant differences in total and marketable yield as well as in mean fruit weight between plants grown in rockwool and straw mediums. The total fruit yield of tomato plants grown in sand was lower compared to rockwool-grown plants. The fruit of tomato grown in sand was shown to have more dry matter (5.52%), total sugars (2.58% FR.W.) and potassium (4.19% DW) compared to rockwool culture as well as significantly the highest amount of silicon. The leaves of tomato fertilized with the silicon-enriched nutrient solution contained more silicon as well as less manganese and zinc compared to control plants. The results of the study on the content of selected chemical components of watermelon (total sugars, reducing sugars, vitamin C, carotenoids and beta-carotene) of Polish cultivar ‘Bingo’ are presented in the paper. Cultivation was conducted in two successive vegetative seasons (2005 and 2006) near Bydgoszcz, with the use of drip irrigation. During seedling production three different variants of irradiation were used: sunny light, artificial daylight and artificial blue light. The drip irrigation, used during the vegetative season, decreased the content of total sugars as well as that of carotenoids and beta-carotene in watermelon fruits, whereas the content of reducing sugars and vitamin C was higher than that in fruits obtained from control plots (without irrigation). Irradiation with artificial daylight during seedling production had a positive influence on the content of total carotenoids, beta-carotene and vitamin C in watermelon fruits. The content of sugars was differentiated in fruits of watermelon by irradiation of seedlings. Fruits of plants originated from seedlings irradiated with sunny light were characterised by the highest content of sugars.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum Mill.), despite its high dietary value, is not a very popular vegetable in Poland. It bulbs constitute a low-calorie food, abundant in vitamins and mineral salts. They also contain, though in smaller amounts, the essential oil, determining the use of fennel fruit in medicine. In the field experiment with fennel growing the influence of soil mulching and flat plant shielding, as well as sowing term upon the nutritional values of two fennel cultivars, was examined. The studies covered 3 kinds of covers (covering the soil with black polyethylene film PE, covering the soil with black polypropylene unwoven PP 50 g m-2 and flat covering of plants with white unwoven PP 17 g m-2 (the controls were plots without covers), 3 sowing terms directly in the field, 2 cultivars (Rudy F1 and Zefa Fino). The applied covers did not significantly affect the nutritional value of fennel bulbs. The bulbs of plants from June sowings contained the most protein, total nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen, as compared to earlier sowing terms. The most dry matter, vitamin C, sugars,0 phosphorus and potassium were determined in fennel bulbs from May sowings. The least protein, sugars and potassium was contained in plant bulbs from April sowings. The bulbs of Rudy F1 cultivar were more abundant in protein, phosphorus and calcium than those of Zefa Fino cultivar. The cultivars did not differ in dry matter, nitrate, vitamin C, total sugars, fibre and potassium contents in the bulbs.
