The thesis contains proposals concerning evaluation of internal auditors for quality management systems compliant with ISO 9001, taking into consideration the specificity of timber industry enterprises. It is a concept considering both the requirements determined in ISO 19011 standard, as well as knowledge gained through experience in auditor valuation. Due to its particular character it may be used without changes, or may be modified depending on peculiarity of the given enterprise as far as scope of auditing is concerned.

The article relates to arduousness of work and draws particular attention to the problem of accidents at work in timber industry companies in the years 2005-2011. A concise description is presented of the issue of work arduousness caused by noise, mechanical vibration and timber dust, as they are important factors affecting employees’ health. The final part of the paper shows conclusions which may contribute to raising the standards of working conditions in timber industry companies.

Social responsibility as a means towards sustainability in timber industry. Concerns about social responsibility have become an increasingly high profile issue in many countries, industries and businesses. The forest industry is one of the most sensitive sectors paying the crucial role in global sustainable development due to its unique role in industrial development, globalization of economy and increase of social awareness about forest and timber business. The main purpose of the article is to approach theoretically the SR strategy in timber industry by taking into consideration legal and ethical, reputational and social points of view. The second - is to give a simple overview how SR is implemented by the Polish company registered in the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The website of companies registered on the Warsaw Stock Exchange is recognized as a reliable and valuable source of information due to the WSE strategy based on the principles of corporate social responsibility. As a main conclusion of the examination one may stress that although the data gathered in this article is not adequate enough the Polish timber industry does not perceive the sustainability as its major objective. The companies accept only legal requirements and standards. If they carry out socially responsible activities, it is due to a necessity to be visible and perceived as a liable organization.

The operations of each and every Polish company representing timber industry are determined not only by home market situation but also directly or at east indirectly by foreign markets. Taking into account the above mentioned aspects as well as the process of ever growing prices of raw products, constantly growing costs of energy and labour it may be observed that without adequate support those companies will experience difficulties maintaining high economic activity. The article aims at indicating the problems affecting timber industry and pointing out the factors which influence the current picture of Polish timber market.
