This paper analyses the hypothesis that there is a link between the psychophysical traits of horses trained for racing and the level of cortisol in the saliva and performance results in competitions. Based on this hypothesis, the objective of the study was to analyse the correlation between the evaluations of the psychosomatic status and the concentration of cortisol and performance parameters in racing horses. The study was carried out with 30 Purebred Arabian horses (15 stallions and 15 mares), aged 34–38 months. On the initial day of the experiment, the horses were kept in the area of the Służewiec Racetrack where they had arrived 3–4 months earlier. The horses were examined once, 2–3 days before the planned start of the first race. The examination was carried out during a daily training session. The visual and behavioural scores for the psychosomatic status of the horse were scaled from 1 to 5 and assigned by a trainer three times. The first assessment took place directly after physical exercise, the second 15 minutes following physical exercise, while the third one was 45 minutes after physical exercise. The following features were included: the manner of perspiration and some organoleptic characteristics of sweat, abdominal movements, gaze, head position and body movements during handling. The saliva for cortisol concentration measurements was sampled three times at time points coinciding with the observation of the psychosomatic status of the horses. The concentration of cortisol was determined with the immune-enzymatic method. In addition, an analysis of the selected performance parameters was conducted. The multivariate analysis of variance for repeated measurements, t-Tukey’s test and Spearman's rank correlations were performed. It was demonstrated that the assessment of the psychosomatic status in Purebred Arabian horses may be applied based only on an analysis of some parameters determined directly after physical exercise or during the first minutes of resting (regeneration). These elements mainly include the manner of sweating and various organoleptic features of the sweat. It was also emphasized that non-observable body movements, calming down during handling, and regular abdominal movements are beneficial for stallions.
The aim of this study was a comparative analysis of five minute episodes of mechanical colonal descending distension (CD) of different degrees, which were provoked by the insertion of a balloon filled with 150 and/or 200 ml of water (CD150 and/or CD200), and plasma cortisol concentration changes as a consequences of the hypothalamo-pituitary-cortico-adrenal axis (HPA) stimulation and nociceptive/stressoric effects. Furthermore, noting the comparative influence of premedication by metabotropic glutamate receptor antagonists via L-isomer and DL-AP3 racemate i.c.v. one min infusion in three different doses (0.2, 0.4 or 0.8 and 4.0, 8.0 or 12.0 mg in toto, respectively) on the plasma cortisol concentration changes, during 120 min of experimentation. The experiment was carried out in four series using 12 female sheep, Polish Merinos, in the anoestrus period (May–June). In the first series (six animals as a control group) the animals had a 200 μl 0.9% NaCl i.c.v. infusion. In the second series they (six animals) had a five min episode of CD by insertion of a balloon filled with 150 and/ or 200 ml of water (CD150 or CD200). In the third series of the experiment six animals had an i.c.v. DL-AP3 or L-AP3 infusion in three different doses (4.0, 8.0 or 12.0 and 0.2, 0.4 or 0.8 mg in toto, respectively), and in the fourth series, ten minutes before CD200, every week. Colon descending distension episodes lasting five minutes provoke a very repetitive, statistically significant increase of plasma cortisol concentration, a critical indicator of the stressoric effect as a consequence of HPA axis stimulation. Undoubtedly DL-AP3 racemate and L-isomer AP3, as metabotropic nonspecific glutamate receptor type-1 antagonists, attenuated this elevation of cortisol, and can be an alternative drug in colonal pain caused by wall distention in sheep.
Results of some studies conducted in the Department of Horse Breeding and Use, published in the recent five years in highly valued international journals, are presented. The studies on horse hooves showed the width of the hoof to be the most appropriate index of the absolute hoof size. As a relative measure of the size, the percentage proportion of the hoof width to the horse chest circumference was suggested. Digital image analysis of 2750 free jumps of young stallions enabled to determine the desired traits of the jump and to suggest the index of the jump. A study performed at the Three Day- Events (cross-country) indicated that the scores could be partly associated with the horse vision system different than the human one. The level of cortisol In saliva was subjected to examine the stress In the horse. The results inferred that samples taken during a short-term effort did not illustrate the actual reaction to the stress. The studies conducted on initial training of Purebred Arabian horses showed that the natural method caused less increase of the heart rate than the traditional training and the response was particularly differentiated in the case of colts.
