In 15 pigs subjected to the stress of isolation, immobilization and slaughter, the c-reactive protein, ceruloplasmine, total protein level, gamma-globulin fractions, as well as lysozyme activity in the sera were tested. It was determined that the stres connected with slaughter does not effect changes in the concentration of acute phase protein (APP), while total protein levels as well as gamma globulin fractions are lowered both during immobilization and stress. Lysozyme activity in the sera rises during the isolation of the pigs, which may indicate the mobilization of uncharacteristic defence mechanisms.
The aim of the study was to estimate the effect of tylosin and prebiotics (β-glucans and mannanooligosaccharides) added to feed on the selected humoral immune parameters in calves. Among them, the concentrations of total protein and γ-globulin, titre of conglutinin, and activity of alkaline phosphatase were tested in calf serum. The study was performed on 36 clinically healthy, Black and White Lowland breed calves, aged 6-8 weeks. The animals were randomly divided into three equal groups. The calves in group I were fed with feedingstuff supplemented by the tylosin. The second group of calves received prebiotics and the control (group III) was fed the same feedingstuff without the additives. The results indicated that supplementation of feedingstuff with prebiotics and tylosin had a positive effect on the total protein and gammaglobulin concentrations. The titre of conglutynin was significantly higher in the group of calves fed prebiotics in comparison with the control group. The activity of alkaline phosphatase was higher in both experimental groups of animals but a stronger activity of this enzyme was observed in the calves fed tylosin.
The objective of the studies was to determine the dynamics of certain parameters of nonspecific cellular and humoral immunity in piglets in the post-natal period. The parameters of immune responses were determined in blood samples of 7 randomly chosen piglets before feeding them their first doses of colostrum, 48 h after colostrum feeding and at the age of 7, 14, 21 and 35 days of life. The following parameters were examined: the NBT, phagocytic index, test of intracellular killing, level of total protein and γ-globulin complex, lysozyme activity and IgG concentration. It was found that the nonspecific mechanisms of cellular and humoral immunity increased along with the age of piglets. Moreover, the serum IgG level diminished quickly from 30 g/l at the age of 48 h to 3,7 g/l at the age 35 days. The results of examination indicate that piglets are the most sensitive to diseases between their first 14 to 35 days of life.
