The paper demonstrates results of the stock monitoring of blackfin icefish in the region of South Georgia in the period of 1988/89-1991/92 as well as summarises seventeen-year period ofobservatio (1976/77 -1991/92). The influence of fishing on stock strucrture and supposed reasons of Quctuation ofyear-classes number are discussed.
Two stocks of Baltic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) were cultured under different conditions. Initially, the first group was held in an earthen pond without water flow, and after three years It was moved to a tank in a closed recirculating system. The second group was cultured throughout the study period in a flow-though trout pond. Both groups were fed similarly. Fish growth in the earthen pond was unsatisfactory, and fish condition decreased, but the annual mean body mass increases in the flow-through pond ranged from 30 to 40%. After moving the first group of fish to the tank, the poor growth was compensated for and by the end of the 2011 the mean body mass of these fish exceeded the mean of that in the other group. The results of gonad maturity tests performed in the final phase of the study indicated there were maturing males in both groups of fish.
The results of anchovy stock assessment during surveys in periods 1976-1984 and 1989-1990 are given. The influence of the curves of spawning intensity on the error in stock assessment is also discussed. During the periods of surveys it was observed that anchovy stock was decreasing. Estimates using the batch fecundity method show that anchovy stocks were highly overestimated because their fecundity was underestimated. It is obvious that in future surveys in the Adriatic, the batch fecundity methods has to be applied.
The influence of the year class size (in numbers) and a stock biomass on the growth rate of 13 cohorts (1971-1983) of the Northwest Atlantic mackerel were investigated. It has been stated that the year class size actually influenced the growth of the examined fish only in the first year of life. The stock biomass was strongly correlated with the growth rate during the first and the second years of life. The density-dependent growth in 3-7 years old mackerel was not observed.
